do we have any IDI guru's out there?

Just listened to the video with headphones and it sounds like a valve/ lifter problem. Bent valve stem or really, really sticky or like a hydraulic lifter that won't bleed down like it should.
It's like the engine is catching and trying to stop for a fraction of a second. Almost expected to see vapor come out of the intake when it chugged.

I watched several times and the sound just as the engine shook was where I was getting valve problem.
Last night I woke up thinking about this.
Did you say one original injector was not popping open at all?
I read what you said again, and just want to make sure I was understanding correctly.

And has the engine not been run much in recent months?
I am starting to think that the stuck shut injector could have caused some problems in the IP.
All that pressure with no place to go on that cylinder, for no one knows how long.
The other thing that comes to mind, the one stuck open most likely has a lot of carbon deposits in the cylinder, which could be causing a valve to stick.
If it were mine, I would drain the fuel filter, fill it with Diesel Kleen and reinstall.
Then start the engine for 15 seconds and shut it off.
Now let it sit for a day with the Diesel Kleen in the IP.
Next day, start it up and let it warm up good, then run it a bit on the hard side.
With any luck the deposits out of the IP will let it work like it should and the hard drive will blow some of the carbon out since the injectors are now working like they should be.
A strong dose of Diesel Kleen has fixed more engine problems than you can imagine on the IDI engines.
Always a good starting place when you have problems since it is both cheap and easy to do.

i did the diesel kleen thing once, but i only let it sit for an hour. the damaged pump due to the stuck injector is a very good idea. also carbon because of the open injector... on older gassers, when the carbon would really build up they would kinda sound like that. predetonation. i am gonna do the diesel kleen now, white or gray?

The IDI is a very tough engine.
I would drive it some before I starred swapping parts.
If it sat much, you may be surprised when it comes back to life with a bit of driving and fuel system cleaner.
Given how much fuel and extra soot the leaking injector may have put in the oil, it may take an oil change or two to get it cleaned out.
One thing for sure, with new injectors you should be well on your way.

it seems to get a little better each time i run it, which isnt much. iam gonna go ahead and do the powerstroke conversion. so if anybody is interesyed, the IDI and my 97 f250 in my sig will be up for sale. i will be keeping my toolboxes, stacks, other accessories, and of corse all the powerstroke related stuff. if i let the tranny go, there will be enough to make a 97 f250 IDI. when i get back to new orleans next week, ill do the swap and post in the classifieds. just a heads up.
