I installed a pioneer bt 920 but I am having a hard time deciding on where and what type camera to install. I would like to install a small round one in the rear window plastic handle. the camera's most use will be backing up to trailers to line up the ball and hitch. Can anyone with pictures post some and your thoughts on yours?
thanks
I put mine in the rear handle. I had similar requirements - primary use is to hook up the boat which has worked out great. Looking at the back of the truck from a normal height the camera is barely noticeable but this one is looking up at it slightly so it stands out. Here's a couple of pics:
that looks great
was it difficult to install and run the wiring? I have not taken the handle apart, was it difficult to run the wires as well?
What camera did you use?
thanks
If anyone has any other camera installs please post them!
Just finished installing a Peak wireless camera from Advance Auto 80.00
Here is what I know:
It would have been easier to start at the rear and actually run wire from backup lights to the front to power the monitor. That is hindsite so here is what I know:
The camera is wired to factory backup lights and ran to the transmitter which I screwed onto the rear wall> Another option for power would be from the 7 pin tow harness>
The reverse wire is behind passenger floor panel and is black and pink ( i found more than one pink and black in there!) Ran that power under carpet to driver side> Monitor is mounted on dash pillar and used the supplied wire to run down the door molding and spliced into wire I ran under the carpet> then drilled small hole in metal beside e brake to use for ground> After all this I thought I should have ran power and ground just up the driver side from the rear
Good luck!
I hear lots of people putting this on toggle switch but I figure the one time i dont flip the switch will be the time there is a random pole behind me.

Nice camera placement, and nice boat!
I'm interested in doing this to my excursion so I appreciate the thread and information being shared here. Interested to see what others are doing and would recommend.

Thanks. The wiring wasn't difficult to run - all of the plastic trim panels pop off pretty easily and the wires can be run front to rear. I used a fairly cheap reverse angle camera I got off eBay a couple of years ago. Has a good picture and provides the exact view I need to hook things up to the hitch. I installed driving lamps in the rear which are hooked up to the reverse lights which provide enough light to back up while being able to see the image through the monitor.

I use my camera for the same reason...mounted the camera just above llicense plate - I tried several locations prior to this one...
Since I use a Hensley it's important to get a straight shot into the stinger - beings as my significant other is apparently direction challenged this was the best fit to solve the problem - I get a great view down the throat of the target.
my 05 excursion had an eclipse headunit with the camera stuck just to the side of the license plate , net to the plate light. the problem was when it looked like the ball and hitch were lined up. They were way off. I am not sure if it was the camera, it was almost so wide it was like a fisheye lens or if the problem was the location.
I really think the camera located in the rear window handle is ideal. If you look at the new ford trucks they have mounted the cameras in the bed handle as well. I would guess it depends on if you are using it to watch out in backing up or tired of getting in and out 5 times truing to line up a trailer!!
Mine is installed dead center of the license plate, when I installed my Kenwood DNX6960 I added the more expensive camera that has night view ability. I will take pics tomaro and email them to anyone who wants to see the location and view. I will try to get them on here but have problems using the current setup they have on this site for posting pictures.

Has anyone tried one of these, an Audiovox CAMSBAR Backup Camera? It has a camera and two ultrasonic sensors on a chrome bar that mounts under the license plate?
