Question - Ignition Switch Wiring

Good afternoon!

The PO of my '65 F250 2wd had put on a generic ignition switch, and I decided to restore the switch to something more appropriate that I got through Dennis Carpenter. I've found that the PO did some "interesting" things to the electrical wiring, and I'm trying to correct some of those issues. I've got a wiring diagram from another Ford truck site that I have mostly figured out, but there's one symbol that eludes me. Can someone tell me or show me what the < symbol that I have circled in red mean? Wire 37 comes from the battery connection on the starter solenoid and splits with wires going to the BAT terminal on the ignition switch, the headlight switch, and the fuse box. The other yellow wire appears just to dead-end. Help! Thanks.

There are definitely what appear to be "unused" connectors in the under dash wiring harness. Some of them are likely test points that they used to check with a test light or other meter. The one you circled - 21 - would check the all important "power to the ignition switch" coming from the (B)attery side of the Relay. Just above it you should find number 137 which would check the "power to the headlight switch, stop lamp switch and turn signal flasher".

TA455HO,

Thanks for the quite response. I'm guessing I just cap it off then?

If you want - the factory just left them open. Don't worry, you won't have any electrons spilling out on the floor. Current doesn't flow where connections don't exist. But, a cap or piece of electrical tape wouldn't hurt for that matter.

I could be mistaken (that's a common condition for me) but I think the original harness had a female plug in that location to tap in for an "always hot" connection. I believe I used that one for my audio system, but added an in-line fuse for safety. I will have to check when I get home.

Yeah, but I'd rather not get a jolt if I'm fiddling around down there.

Before adjusting my fiddle I always disconnect the battery to my fiddle amp first.

To be sure you could cap it with a vacuum cap or something. It’s a convenient plug, though, if you ever need 12V.

Sometimes I get excited and forget.

PS - I may have multiple post-secondary degrees, but I'm still born and raised in East Tennessee. Fiddle is both a noun and a verb.

Ahh, live a little. It's only 12V anyways. The amps, the amps are what'll get ya!
