Transmission life span?

I have kind of looked around and not been able to find out the answer i was looking for plany.

What is the Life span of the 5R110 Trany stock? and how many miles are taken off the lifespan with a tune in that has transmission tuning in it? I know there are many factors (tune, driving habits, towing)

According to our resident Ford transmission engineer the 5R110 was designed to last 250K miles.

I know SEVERAL folks at almost 200k and no problems yet.

But they do their flushes and filter changes meticulously and are not running tunes

I have 379000km (235,000 miles) on my 2004. Drain and change my pan and external filter every 30,000km since 200,000km(124,000miles). Still going strong and I tow 10,000lbs to 12,000lbs regularly.

There is a definite advantage to running transmission ONLY tuning though. The shifts are much crisper/firmer and temps are much cooler. The generic factory tuning is NOT the best for transmission life IMHO.

Good question.

So when a transmission reaches the point where it needs work or rebuilding, what typically gets done? ( I'm at 190,000 now & could hit 230K+ by next year).

How much $$ should I start saving for tranny work?
And what options are there for upgrading it if its on the operating table?
Thanks.

so far as cost goes that also depends on what breaks. if all you need is soft parts its a lot cheeper.
the 5r110 seems to hold really well in micu's and oil filed trucks. see lots with over 100k and if anyone can screw up a truck its either of them.

I don't know what/who "micu"...but I'll completely agree the oil field life is rough on any truck. A railroad is rough on them as well...but usually the truck has been totaled before they get close to 200k miles on them.

The brother in law has 330k on his 03, he has never done a flush with a machine either. He drops the pan and replaces screen and filter twice a year though...
