my truck was stolen and recovered, missing some parts of course. problem is once I replaced battery, starter, ignition switch, truck doesn't start. when I turn the key I just get a click. even with the starter totally removed I turn the key and get one click . is this the sign of a bad ground somewhere. this is how I feel = any help is greatly appreciated.
I would think that it might be security computer related issue not sure if that means taking the truck to the dealer and having them program something to accept the new parts or what but that would be my first guess.
BTW welcome to FTE sorry it's not under better conditions.
The PATS system usually does not prevent the motor from cranking over.
If you just hear a click, it's the start relay pulling up but no power passing to the starter.
After the cranking issue is resolved and if the motor fails to start, then you may have a PATS issue as second problem.
Carefully check the wireing to the starter.
The ignition switch closes power thru to the start relay that closes heavey contacts to the starter from the battery..
This is the trouble point I think you are at.
Good luck.

I was wondering if anyone may be able to shine some light on an issue I'm experiencing.
I have a 1999 Mountaineer that is a recovered stolen vehicle. It shows a P1260 code immediately after clearing the codes every time.
I have the original key for the vehicle, but it appeared as though the PATS pick-up may have been damaged as a result of the theft. I searched the bone-yards and found another 1999 with the key in the ignition and took the key and the pick-up and installed it in this Mountaineer.
I still have the same problem; Theft light flashes, P1260 code in the computer immediately after clearing codes.
Does something else have to be changed along with the pick-up ring for the key? I'm not sure were to go with this now.
Any help or info anyone may have would be GREATLY appreciated!!
God's blessings to you.

As far as I know the PCM has to be programed to accept the signal sent by the chip in the key, Ford can do this and I've read that some locksmiths can also.
well just wanted to check back in, after checking the wiring as someone advised me I solved my problem......I had a bad ground. i feel so stupid, sometimes it's the simplest things that we over look or so sure we did it right...thanks again

They said they had bad ground that more than likely was the battery or the ground at the starter cylinder relay or the one on the starter or wire to the starter.

Yes, the PATS module (in the display head) needs to be programmed to the key. You can do it yourself with the free forscan app and a cheap ELM327 adapter. Google for details.
