Ok I know the 5.4 has a over-head cam.. but if it is a dual overhead cam does that mean that there are a total of 4 cams - 2 for each head- or just 2 cams -1 for each head-.. I am just curious and are the regular 16 valve engines or 32 valve engines.. just a crazy question that I was wondering.
Thanks for the patience w/ a newby to these motors

It's a fair question IMO. Think of a cylinder head as its own entity. Therfore if it's a DOHC every cylinder will have 2 cams. V engines having 2 heads would have four total cams and a W block would have 6 cams. (as a DOHC)
To confuse the issue the SOHC or DOHC setup really has little to do with valve numbers. Honda makes SOHC 4 valve motors and there have been DOHC with 2 valves per cylinder. Basically on a DOHC motor one cam operates the intake and one cam operates the exhaust weather it be 1 or 2 valves per cylinder.
However, in Ford's current line up, all DOHC engines(Cobra, Marauder, Aviator, Navigator, Lincoln LS a few V-6's) are 4 valve heads. All current SOHC motors are 2 valve with a 3 valve coming soon.
