A/C not working

Went to get one of those recharge cans at the local auto parts store and got talkin with the guy and he said not to waste my money until i know why its not working. I always assumed that if it didnt work then it needed to be filled but before i go spend 100 buck at a auto repair place to get it filled i was wondering if anyone can chime in and give me there thoughts. thanks

FYI: The ac hasnt worked since i bought the truck 2 years ago.

We are going to need a little more info.Does the clutch engage when you turn the switch on?I am sure you have checked fuses?

If the clutch is engging when you turn the a/c on it should cool at least somewhat

Need to hook a set of gauges up and read high side and low side pressure
