New to Ford

Hi I'm pretty new to ford, I am building a 72 ranchero I have aquired a 1987 E150 351W motor 3spd auto haven't seen the van yet, it is running well. It is intended to supplement the ranchero with parts. I would like to rebuild the 351 before I put it in, what is a good streetable setup for that motor? I want good performance, not concerned with emissions or gas milage, but longevity is a must, 91oct max. Again I know nothing about this motor, so what am I looking at, parts wise and cash, or what would you do?

welcome to FTE. well i would say a stock rebuild with a .30 overbore should be fine and add some headers and good exhaust. maybe get the heads ported and polished, adding an electric fan and maybe port/polish/extrude hone (whatever its called) the intake or maybe look to the Ford performance parts catalog and look for a different intake (if its EFI), u can also install a mild street cam. since the motor is comin out of a van it'll be set up more for torque then HP. since its an 87 im assuming its EFI so ur good for the drivability and longetivity if u mantence it well. dont have many specifics but hope i helped somewhat.

Thanks, hoping it was a reasonable swap. Not sure yet if it is carb or efi, missleading info everywhere. I guess I'll know wednesday when I pick it up.

351W that is a 1974 casting block. Thats the one to look for. I don't remember the codes for the block but they are on the right side of the block near the starter. The one I bult had around 100,000 on it and I did not have to bore it, just break the glaze on the cylinders. The setup I have is in a 1983 Mustang 'vert with a C5 tranny. I bought the rering set from Northern Auto Parts and substituted the standard parts fro the prmium and added the cam kit. Sorry for the long post, buthis worked out very well for me.

Ported/polished heads
Edelbrock Performer intake
Mustang shorty headers
Sealed power cam/lifters
Cloyes double roller chain/gear set
750 Carter AFB
FelPro gaskets
Clevite bearings
Sealed power rings
Melling oil pump

Check this Bronco for some ideas. I used an '88 F-150 5.0L in it.
