Well to be honest I am sure you are right. I bought it from a 17yo kid. Pulled round bail hay wagons and with a 460 I am sure he never over reved it. I'd like to get this truck going. Being a true to life handyman, I never know what I will end up doing next week. I need something that can haul and tow. I can literally fill the bed with all my tools. I was first drawn to the fact it was a 250 with a 460. I am not worried about gas mileage due to the fact the area I live in is small and I am just about the only game in town. Keeping busy is not a prob. Keeping a running truck seems to be the problem. I have gone to the IN chapter looking for help. Seems living in Southern IN isnt a big Ford community close. When the tranny went in I was told the band screw had been tightened all the way. I am getting more scared what the final cost for getting Ghost road worthy and dependable is going to be. Since the truck came from Kansas and then OK the frame isnt all rusted. Has a lot of mud caked everywhere, but I can take care of that. This is also the first truck I've ever had that had a big block. I am a newbe to what I even need to know about it. I been looking at head prices in the event I need them. There goes another $800 plus. I'm open to any more suggestions from any other 460 owners past and present. I'm on the fence as to what to do. If there are any of you true blue ford mechanics out there that want to advise me I'd appreciate that as well. By the way, I didnt mean to hyjack this thread. Any responces can be sent to my email. irishhandyman@gmail.com . Thanks
I owned one for 7 years never had any head problems. The only thing i done to it internaly was a timing chain at 134,000 miles, when, it started slapping. The truck was a 88 F350 4x4 DRW C&C 5spd, Own one now, the 90 in my sig for 3yrs no head problems either. I'll take the 460 over that Winnie the Pooh 302 anyday
Okay, thanks for responding. From what I have found out elsewhere, for what all money I have and will have in it I won't be to far off the value of the truck. That is if NOTHING else craps out. I did find a set of new heads for under $650.00.
Keep more positive info coming, I need all the positive reinforcement I can get right now.
Keep the 460. The 302 should of never been offered in a pick up of any kind. They just do not generate the torque need to move these heavy trucks.
As fo the problem with your 460, it sounds as though the install of the used heads on the differnt block was done wrong. i would pull the heads, have them checked for flatness and cracks and put a pair of head gaskets in
Well if my "mechanic" pulled the heads Saturday like he told me he would I am taking them to be checked out. I hate the thought of having to buy new heads, but I'm about at the point of no return on this truck. From what I was told the bottom end is from an older carbed dump truck. They used the original heads and intake. Since I amhaving the same problem short of hydolocking again I suspect the heads are boat anchors.
I am open to any suggestions as to sites to check for heads. Places some of you have used and have had good dealings with. Any suggestions as to brand of gaskets to use? From what I have found out the sealing the heads to the intake can be tricky, any thoughts?
I do agree that a 302 just wouldnt be that great for a heavy haulin rig, especially since that bronco probably has an auto. But then again, he has the engine already, and he might just use it as a daily driver and occasional hauler. With the right gearing, it should do just fine. It's no wonder that stock small block wont pull those ridiculous 38's worth a dang, THEIR 38's! Also, contrary to popular belief, the 302 has MORE TORQUE than the 300. It was just 400 rpm's later. The 300 just has no horsepower and doesnt do any good to rev out so it seems as though its a torquey engine.
With all of that being said, a swap like that would be fairly time consuming, especially if your switching from a manual to an auto or vice-versa. if 4wd, the transfercase may even need to be switched and or different drivelines.
Yes... Would also like to hear the reasoning for this odd swap. My 5.0 is a dog in this heat. When it cools off a little it's fine, but otherwise I gotta stand on it to get it to move and get up to speed. It's not the best on the HW either, needs 1/2 throttle to keep moving at 65, and god forbid you slowdown and you need to hurry up and pass. Matting it is frequent on the HW around here.
the 302 is a great little engine I had it in a 73 ford ranchero, all i did was add a mallory duel point dist, and jet the 2bl carb a little, and dual exhaust with turbo mufflers, and on a trip back from Lake Tahoe, i raced a 914 porsche, with 2 guys in the porsche, i was pulling away from them doing 120 mph + the guy in the pass side was Laughing his buns off and pointing to my Ranchero pulling their porsch
I have to agree I love the little windsor but it should be in something that is small like cars and even little rangers and bronco's II not the F250. I am currently going though the same thing. I bought on thats really clean but the motor wasn't taken care of. I bought it blown up. I thought about small block 351 then my brother reminded me about the one I used to have it just didnt have it for loads on the HW. I ended up buying a new crate 460. best of luck to you.
