I have a 79 F150 4x4 with a 4 speed manual trans and a 351m. The trans is shot. Does anyone know if a 4 speed form a mid 80's f series or bronco will bolt up to my transfer case? Also what needs to be changed if i switch to auto?
Your trans is a 4x4 435NP or a 4x4 T-19 and they are interchangeable. Some of the 80s F series did use this trans.
You would have to have a 4x4 Automatic to mate to the transfer case. You would need to change out the steering column to get the gear selector and change out the pedals. This is a pretty good job but doable.

You either have a New Process 435, Borg Warner T18 or T19.
So, anything other Ford model 4 speed transmission is a straight bolt in. Keep in mind the later T19 transmissions have differing 1st gear ratios.
To swap to an auto you would either need to change out the steering column or adapt a floor shifter. You wouldn't really need to change out the manual pedals, just lock the clutch pedal to the firewall to keep it out of the way.
