Installing options that were never there...

I have an 04 bone stock crew cab 4x4, and by bone stock I mean I was shocked the thing had A/C. So my question is, when an option isn't installed is the wiring still there for it? I know my truck doesn't have the rear speakers, but everything is there for them ie. holes, wires, etc. I would think that most of the wiring for stuff is there just not the hardware as it's faster/easier/cheaper to wire the trucks up on the assembly line the same just not add the hardware.

Some of the things that I'm looking into are the roof mount center console, going from the small manual windows to the power fold/telescope mirrors, and a few other things I might come up with. Just want to know how much a PITA the wiring is going to be.

i can't speak for an 04, but 08's seem to all have the same main wiring harness...

I've added the OE:
TowCommand Brake Controller
Single Disk CD player
Rear Speakers
AUX jack
Cab Lights
Fog Lights
Cruise Control

and I'm in the process of adding redundant audio controls.

so far the wiring has been there for all of them (except for a little bit on the steering wheel controls, expect a writeup of that later today)

I should point out that most of these things required a parameter to be enabled by the dealer.

The power fold/telescope mirrors will be a huge PITA for you, as they were not available until '08... I've looked into it and I believe that they'll even be a huge PITA for me with an '08... I might try to pull the mirror switch out in a bit to see if the wiring is there for it... if not, it would probably involve more wiring than most people are willing to deal with.

I'll take your word on the mirrors, I'm the only one that drives my truck and I don't tow too often so it's something I can live without. I do want the bigger tow mirrors, so I'll just get the manual ones, should be a 10 minute install lol. I wouldn't be surprised that most of the wiring for things are there, other then stuff like power windows and door locks but who knows.

You had to reflash the computer for cruise control right? Where did you take it to do that, the dealer?

Bought it "used" with 3,000 miles on it $17,200

Very difficult to find a stick with all of those options.

I got lucky it was a Regular cab, Stick, with Towing mirrors... Those would have been the hardest things to change.

I now have one of the most loaded XLs there ever was... Two long distance projects are a V10 swap and a 4x4 conversion

yes, the cruise control was as simple as swapping steering wheels and taking it to my local dealer (Varsity FLM) and having them enable speed control.

they charged 1/2 hour and I had them do a courtesy inspection at the same time.

As soon as the FedEx truck gets here I'll have my donor steering wheel to steal the wiring harness out of for radio controls. I don't understand why, but Ford made three different wiring harnesses (possibly 4) to fit into steering wheels (horn only, CC & horn, HVAC & Radio & CC & horn... and possibly Radio & CC & horn)

None of these harnesses are available separate from the steering wheel itself. So when I end up with a vinyl wheel with CC & radio it will be a very subtle custom job.

I found both the vinyl CC wheel and my donor Lariat wheel on Ebay for around $50 each...and they include switches.

the vinyl wheel was in used, but unused condition and the Lariat wheel was just the cheapest I could find.

both are over $200 new and do not include the switches.

My delima is that I will end up with a steering wheel shell with no wiring inside... the only way I can sell it is if somebody has a bent wheel that they can steal a wiring harness from... The switches are, however, sellable and might very well bring back my entire $50 (I bought a new switch set that doesn't ahve HVAC controls from partsguyed)

and yes, new wiring would be required for power folding/telescoping mirrors.

When I upgraded my 2001 XL to add power windows, power locks, and power (heated) mirrors I discovered that Ford did not include all the wiring (including contacts to hold the fuses) for most of these items. Some wiring exists that comes back to the C217 and C218 connectors behind the fuse panel cover ahead of your right knee. Most wires that are there connect back to power distribution, but some do not.

In 2002 Ford made many changes to the electrical system (including eliminating the GEM module) and your truck may have all the wiring you need.

What about power windows on a xl truck. I think on some years they were a option on a xl but u usually don't see them very often.

Power windows came on mine so I don't know what would be missing on a truck without them.
