I have a banks sidewinder turbo and the seals are shot. I was wondering how hard it is to remove from the motor and then if it is possible for me to rebuild it myself or do i need to send it in somewhere?
sorry nobody responded to this posting. sometimes new posts get pushed off to the second page in a hurry. its not too hard to remove from your engine, depending if you chose to remove the it from the up pipe or you choose to remove it from the exhaust manifold. you will see once you start digging into it. and its something you should just take in to have done. should be around $400 for them to do it. its worth having it done.... if you miss 1 thing, then theres nothing you can do but do it all over again. if you have it done, and something goes wrong they will fix it.

The one I posted is for the wastegated unit. I went through that one before so I asked!
good. that will make things much easier, because the non wastegated turbo parts are now almost as hard to find as hens teeth since banks stopped selling them back in the early 90's.
On the Banks, it's non-wastegated if the exhaust down pipe bolts onto the turbo. If there's a band clamp, it's wastegated. Oh, and I believe the early model uses a Garrett cartridge. The later is a Mitsubishi.
if it has a giant air filter box that covers the top of the engine, and just a turbo on the back of the engine, it is a non waste gated unit.
if it has a small air filter box and a thing that looks like a little piston connected to the turbo with a rod, it has a waste gate.
So now that i look at it again i am pretty sure that it is non-waste gated. does this make the rebuild easier, harder or makes no difference? also, i have a buddy that turbo's snowmobiles, he says that it is very easy to rebuild and should only take about 1 hour, is there much difference between thos turbos or is it just size.
I just hate paying people to work on my stuff, this is my first turbo and would like to learn more about them, do you know if banks has a book or manual that walks through a rebuild.
