hi yall, my 82 ford f100 has a fuel gauge issue. i have repaired the float and is workin properly. the gauge worked fine for a week then stopped workin again. a week later it started workin while i was drivin. it came up to half tank where it should have then started to drop down to quarter tank shortly after then down on E again with in a few minutes. i just checked the sender with my volt meter and it had continuity. i checked the plug that goes to the gauge and it had continuity. now when i checked for voltage with the key on it was weird, the voltmeter would surge from 0 to 12 volts consistently every half second. Does anyone know why it is doin that? And What would cause my gauge not to work i am stumped on this? thank you.
I think I vaguely remember Franklin2 saying something about this voltage fluctuation but
can't remember for certain, maybe he'll chime in.
Pull the wire from the sending unit; with the key in ACC or RUN, ground it to the body or
frame, the gauge should swing all the way in one direction (prolly to Full). Remove the wire,
it should swing fully to the other direction. If this passes, your gauge and wiring are good,
the problem is in the sending unit.
My guess is, the VERY fine wire inside the sending unit has broken - I've seen two strands
of wire floating around *****-nilly in there before. Remove teh sending unit, bend back the 4
tabs that hold the triangular cover on and take a look inside, I'll bet the problem will then be
staring you in the face. There's a brass contactt hat swipes up & down a piece of material
with that very fine wire wrapped around it, that wire eventually wears through and breaks.
