But If I saw 24 libraries like Steve (CMPD1781) I would want them closed.. That is rediculous.. Around here we have 1 library for each town/City and they have agreements that if you need a book you can go get it from them.
Also Libraries are much more than books.. They have Music, DVD's, events for children and adults. They are also a meeting place for many groups.. When I was a Cub Scout Leader we held many a meeting at the local library..
I think Jason has a good point. Higher disposable incomes mean more books and especially paperbacks bought at or through bookstores like Barnes and Noble or Amazon. I am guilty of this. I tried to remember when was the last time I was at the library. It was probably to find some obsolete Ford manual. My favorite book place is actually an outdoor used book store. But that's another topic.
Also Jason's observation that with the internet, "everyone is an author,) is true. Blogs, message boards, social networking sites, wikipedia. Everyone gets to be read.
