Idler pulley gone!

I thought my A/C clutch was failing because of this horrid screeching noise from under my hood. After a quick inspection I was surprised to find that the plastic idler pulley had melted away. All that was left was the bearing. I don't know how the truck ran close to 200 miles like this. Luckily I had an extra tensioner pulley in my garage. I put in the metal tensioner pulley and all is good again.

How can this happen? Am I OK running the metal pulley, or do I need to get another plastic one?

Mine started making noise this spring. I am pretty sure the one I got at the parts store is metal. The one on there orginally was plastic. I haven't had any problems.

It didn't melt away the bearing seized up and the pulley broke off and jumped ship on you. You could of gotten a replacement pulley at autozone for around 10 bucks. Same thing happened on my truck a year or two back.

This was a 6 month old replacement pulley from O'Reilley's.
