Canada and Dubai

So, I am handing out resumés like candy right now. (I am graduating with my BSME in 6 weeks)

My boss asked for one to hand up the chain to a someone who overseas the nuclear department in our company.

They have two possible openings right now that my boss is saying there is a decent chance that I will get offers for both....neither job has been posted, and I get the head start being inside the company, ex-military, and have my top secret clearance which a clearance is needed for nuclear work.

Problem is....

1 job is a 3 year assignment in Canada (I don't know where)

1 job is a 2 year assignment in Dubai

I do not know yet, will get more details later this week on what I would be doing, pay, benefits, vacation and travel. (From what I understand, the company would pay for a limited number of flights back to LA every year) and would need to find out stuff on the whole taxes stuff. (My dad just moved to Bahrain, a few hours from Dubai, and as long as he spends less than 30 days stateside each year, his pay is tax free)

So, anyone ever live in either of these two places? Opinions? btw, I am Catholic, if that where to affect either my opinion, or the locals opinions of me...

In Canada, EH!

You might have to get used to living in an igloo to move up here.
Seriously tho, either place you go I'm sure you will enjoy it, but Canada being closer it would be easier to get back home for visiting when you get home sick. Up here we accept everyone, even from the US.

I don't get home sick. Moved out of the house before I turned 18 for themilitary, and my folks live in Bahrain anyways...

The only problem with Canada though, is that there are so many Canadians!

You do not want to be overseas in 2012.

why? I would still be an American citizen and can do an absentee ballot, can I not?

or if need be, would even fly back to make sure I do my part to get that man out of office.

maybe because in 2012 the world will end as we know it because the Mayan calendar ends?

I believe the first $80K is tax free and you pay taxes on anything over that amount. I'm not sure how company benefits and other perks play into the equation.

Dubai is beautiful as I understand it but I know for a fact that Canada is gorgeous and with more freedoms.

Income taxes in Canada are higher than in the States. We also have national and provincial sales taxes that add around 15% to the cost of most purchases.

Housing is also quite expensive in the major cities. If you're going to Calgary or Toronto you're looking at least a thousand a month for a decent bachelor appt.

For your vehicle, you can drive here in what you have now. Most provinces will give you a few months to get your vehicle registered and you may have to have it inspected as well. Some provinces will also charge you a tax on the book value of the vehicle. You'll want to have your vehicle rust-proofed to protect it from road salt during our 5-6 months of winter, and invest in a good set of winter tires.

We have strict gun control in this country. You may not under any circumstance own a handgun. Rifles are allowed, but you need a Federal permit, and your weapons must be registered with Federal authorities. And don't be fooled by anyone who says Canada is a safe place. Our major cities have more than their share of gangs and violent crime.

What I would do is check with the local chapter from whatever region you plan on going to so you know what neighbourhoods to avoid and can find out what are the regulations in that province for you to bring your car.

I would also give consideration to the costs associated with moving anywhere. A few years, the company where my wife works asked her to take care of some things in Vancouver. The company did put us up in a nice condo, and we had a rental car paid for. But I still found myself going to store for little things the condo didn't have, like ice cube trays, tupperware, clean linen and some decent cooking pans. Same with my customers, a lot of them come to Montreal for school or business. They buy used furniture and appliances on craigslist, because they're only here for a little while. But it still costs money. On the bright side, if you move to Canada, you can bring all your stuff with you.

no no no, Canada is in the middle of no where

To get me to move to Canada is going to take a very good offer, I figure that after adjusting the payckeck for taxes, cost of living, and exchange rate, I want to be making as much in pocket as a 75k paycheck here in the states, or roughly 40-45k after taxes and all adjustments (and knocking off for sales tax as well)

You are going to need to earn at least 100k or better to have that 75k U.S. figure, things here in Ontario just got a lot more expensive last week with another tax. Some items we are now paying tax on tax on tax on tax yes four times for the same thing. They just keep adding taxes on stuff that we already pay taxes on they just give it a different name.

well, that is a number I am at least hoping to get, the job will be in the nuclear engineering field as I understand it, and those guys get paid pretty decently.
