starter problem HELP!

i have a 2000 f-150, went to start this morning and it started fine but the starter kept spinning. turned off the truck and it kept spinning so i disconnected battery cable. this happened twice and now it wont start at all, it clicks and all my gauges jump (which never happened before i dont think). could it be the solenoid or is the starter bad, or something else? is there a way to troubleshoot?

Sounds like the bendix wasn't releasing completely. Also if you are now only getting a click then the
solenoid is probably bad or there is not enough battery voltage getting to the starter. Check the
battery voltage also. The motor running will drain the battery if the engine wasn't running.

Will the bendix keep spinning if the engine is shut off?
This has happened to me, but it was like 20 years ago.
If so, then it does sound like it's time for a new starter.

I've seen that happen. If you're sure you have a good battery I would
remove the starter and have it looked at. Autozone can check them I believe. I imagine it's time for a new starter.

i just posted about this in another thread. check the plastic box mounted under your steering column. it cost me 12$ to replace and stoped burning up starters
