That goes back to the stage coach days when the driver was busy handling the horses and the second man handled the shotgun in case of robbery or attack.

Back in the days of the stagecoaches, the guard, whose job was to protect from Indians and robbers, was assigned the seat next to the driver, at the front of the coach. He was armed with a shotgun or rifle. "Ridng shotgun" became synonymous with riding in the fron next to the driver.
