drilling for hood side FORD

Well, its been 11 years since I painted my 54 truck and had new Ford Crest and FORD F-100 chrome pieces put on the hood, so I figure it is about time to put the dot between the F and the 100 which was missing when my body man put on the F 100. The dots and the clips have been in an envelope on my work bench staring at me ever since so I better get them on soon.

Any advice before I drill a hole in my hood and mess things up? What size bit to use, do I use a punch first to start the hole, etc...

When it comes to drilling holes in nicely painted sheet metal I get skiddish.

thanks!

I would drill a hole in a piece of scrap to make sure that I had the correct size drill bit. Then I would put a piece of masking over the spot on the hood that I was going to drill. This will keep the bit from "walking"...then drill away. BTW, use a sharp bit (but you already knew that)... Before you install the "dot" paint over any bare metal that was exposed by drilling the hole, rust will creep in quick under badges.

Drill

Would it be wise to center punch , then start with a pilot bit, gradually working up to the proper size ?
