Temperature problem

96 F150 4.9l, Just replaced thermostat and fan clutch, didn't fix the problem. Problem is that when driving on the highway for 10 minutes my temperature will be about 30* higher than when driving around town for an hour or so. not sure what would cause that? also when i use the a/c the temperature gets up so high that i have to trn the a/c off because it scares me. not sure what is causing this. any suggestions welcome. Thanks guys

I've had two vehicles do that: Fine around town but heat up on the highway.

Flushing the cooling system fixed both. Used a flushing tee on the heater hose.

Hmm . . .

Just off the top of my head, check the lower radiator hose to see if the spring is still in good shape. The lower hose could be collapsing from constant high speed driving (freeway), causing the flow of coolant to be impeded.

Just my 0.02 USD worth. YMMV

Ever use stop leak in the radiator?
It sounds like you have at least part of the radiator plugged or partialy plugged. At highway speeds, the coolant is flowing too fast thru the remaining unplugged tubes. This doesn't allow it to cool down. Comes in hot and goes out still pretty hot.
The temp gauge in our trucks is not real accutate. Might be interesting to see what the temp really is before doing any more work on it.
Good Luck Frank

okay i will try flushing the system and see if that helps with the highway problem. do you think that would work for the a/c problem too. Because the gauge really goes up when the a/c is on.

While you're back-flushing it, and while the engine is cold, try to collapse that bottom radiator hose by hand. As raystankewitz suggested, the coil may be rusted/gone and it may be collapsing at higher RPMs. You shouldn't be able to collapse the bottom hose. Compare it to the top hose that will collapse (has no coil.)
