I am looking at the possibility of removing my trucks center console for a project I am working on. I have looked inside and there are 4 sheet metal screws or bolts holding it in place.
Has anyone had occasion to remove this center console and if so are these sheetmetal screws or bolts? If they are bolts, are the nuts loose or are they welded to the bottom of the floorpan? I want to know if I remove these screws/bolts, are they going to be a PITA to put back in? I really don't want to have to drop the driveline or some other major thing just to put four little bolts back in place! I have learned (yes, the hard way) that there is no such thing as a "little project". I want to know beforehand what I'm getting myself into!
Looking in the Chilton Manual, here's what you got...
1)disconnect negative battery
2)Open the console glove box and remove the storage compartment for access to the RETAINING SCREWS
3)Remove RETAINING SCREWS securing the console to the floor and slide it rearwards to detatch it from the bracket.
4)Disconnect any electrical connections and remove the console from the vehicle.
5)Install in revers.

mark996,
Thanks for replying but I'm confused. I was talking about the floor console between the front seats of my F350 truck. There's nothing electrical in there and theres no glove box either. Only a little slide-in tray that holds coins and maybe a pack of gum or something. There's four screws or bolts in the bottom holding it to the floor. Now there is a front piece that has the cupholders which looks like a separate piece (two screws, one on each side, hold it to the main compartment) but that might go in and come out as a unit.
I was confused about that too from the manual, says center floor console. Maybe they're calling the glovebox the coin tray? Heck IDK. Mines the same as yours, maybe I'll go take a look at it later and see what I can't come up with. Was hoping the manual would give some sort of help.

Well Mark, your sig says you have an Excursion and so you may have the rear accessory plug or rear stereo controls in your console. That would explain the electrical part. I don't have any such electrical accessory plug in my console. I basically need to know if I take these screws/bolts out, will I drop a nut onto the ground under my truck that I will have a devil of a time putting back in? I want to take the console out temporarily and then put it back when done. But I don't want it to become a major endeavor!
Yeah, the book is for Ford F250/350 and EX's, that would explain the plug. I wouldn't see the the nut dropping to the ground, seems like it'd still be built on the same platform since most of these rigs were, with the bracket underneath that the screws go in to.

The screws will go right back in. No worries about nuts or anything. I took mine out and put in LEDS for heated seats.
The manual I'm guessing meant:
1. lift the lid
2. pull out coin holder thingy
3. pull all the crap out of bottom of console
4. Undo 4 bolts
5. Slide seats back
6. wiggle console till the darn thing comes out.
7. Do what ever it is you think you need in there
8. Reinstall in reverse.
9. Enjoy the new mod!
The electrical connections are mentioned because the console is to cover many different years and vehicles (they usually do the same manual for 350s as they do Excursions, only with some small revisions for the major differences)- just like how most Mustangs do not have a cigarette socket in the center console, but 2003-2004 models do.
And MAKE SURE to disconnect the battery first! Don't want that plastic console to short out and cause a fire! lol
Yeah, I find it funny that for every single procedure listed, it tells you to remove the negative side battery cable. Putting air in a tire? Oh wait...I haven't taken off the negative side cable yet...dangit!
How to disconnect the negative battery terminal.
Step 1: Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
Step 2: Loosen the 8mm bolt found on the negative battery terminal.
Step 3: Disconnect the negative battery terminal.

Thanks for the confirmation Sean. And your instructions are spot on as well! LOL! We'll see just how much wiggling (and expletives) are necessary to get the console out!
I know just what you mean...that negative battery terminal is the first thing you do for ANY work on these vehicles. I had to put a screen front on my truck to keep the bugs outta the radiator. The instructions read "Remove negative battery cable..." LOL!

Really, not that much.
It was more fun taking it apart to get the LED's in. Just remember it is plastic, and usually me and plastic do not get along! I got lucky during that project though!
Good luck and have fun!
What are you putting in there if you don't mind me asking?

I have to build a platform to take the new puppy for rides with us. I looked for a carrier but our dog is just over the weight and size limits of any carrier I could find. So I am having to make my own custom job. And since my console is just a catch all anyway, it will help me keep from cramming it full of junk as well!
