P0460

Two weeks ago while filling my truck up in Az I got a -P0460 code, fuel gauge was below E (looked dead). I shut the truck off and restarted it the Gauge read fine. I went 3 more tanks of gas and once again the Fuel Gauge went to E after leaving the station (not more than 300 feet). I had the first sending unit replaced @ 49K and now I have 69K. I managed to get a whole 20K before another failure. Is this covered by emissions warranty or anything else you gents can think of? If not I am going to fight them for a good will warranty as a second failure in 20K is ridiculous. Truck is a 06 F250 Diesel of course.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>

Are you filling up with the key on?

I have heard that if you do, it can cause this.

Bis I have always done that I didn't realize that would be a problem. Usaully when I am filling up I don't shut her off because of EGT temps, stickler for 375 or below.. I can switch that up but wonder why that is tripping those units up?

I don't recall the explanation, but you might try filling up w/ the key off.

From what I have read, the gauge reading always returns - after awhile.

Are you doing this for the turbo? If so, do you run synthetic oil? If so, you don't have to be quite the stickler for it as synthetic oil makes cool down less of an issue then regular dino oil.

I have no problems switching up a procedure but I know when it has gone wacko the only time I could get it to read normal was a shut down and restart. If I didn't do that the guage would read below E until then. Picky **** electronics...

As for the syn comment your right but just a bad force of habit I guess. I am probably too careful but I have had my share of issues with her.

Turbo 35k, sending unit, egr cooler/oil cooler @ 50K. I ran syn then but for that short of a period it probably can't hurt that bad unless I was towing.

Naw, I wouldn't call it a bad force of habit. Better to be conservative in these matters.

Ok so today I followed the instructions guys, shut the truck off, filled her up and drove 30 miles to a base ball game with no issues. I go to leave the game 3hrs later and right out of the get go the needle goes to E and I get a CEL light P0460. I drove 30 miles back home and 3 miles outside of my house the dam gauge finally goes to full again and reads. Anyone know for sure on the warranty on these things? is it 5/100? I am tweaked at the crappy components! I love the dam truck but god I have had more things go wrong in the first 70k then I did my Duramax the first 100k I had that. I am not bashing FORD so don't jump me I just extremely disappointed as they do make a good product but I have had TERRIBLE luck so far.

the best thing to do is call your servicing dealer and ask. The parts covrage changes from time to time. I know it was a covered part at one time, and I suspect it still is. the only issue I can think of that may cause you a problem if you have a dealer that is a stickler is if the sending unit is rusted, the only way it got that way would be from water and ford didnt put water in your tank. Ive been down this road before

Bis your memory is pretty good sir I combed the Tech thread which I had not done before shame on me and look what I found.

http://https://www.ford-trucks.com/f...gas-guage.html

I am not going to proclaim I understand all of that especially in post #7 from the thread link I put up. It didn't strike me until this morning after reading it this. When the truck did fault last night and went to super empty I switched my Edge Display over to the Fuel Level PID. It (the Edge) was telling me 100% full where the gauge (cluster) was 100% empty. How is it the Edge is receiving signals it's full the the cluster was not? Now I am really starting to wonder what is truly wrong? Course at this point being a total nub in this arena I am probably going to defer to my dealer.

Thanks for all the replies guys it's appreciated I love this place! Anything you wish to add please do so.

the way to test this is somewhat simple. disconnect the sending unit wire harness. check for codes. jump pins 1 and 2 together and check for inverse code. if the inverse code come up then you have proved the harness to cluster is working and the sending unit is failed.
