I bought a poster board that was about 1/2" thick. I got it at Staples for about $4. I put a bungy cord in front of it that runs north to south......I have used it 3 winters so far.....You want to make sure you have the highest temp tstat you can get ie. 195........some people think they can put a 180 in and it will make the heat work better it actually makes it worse because the heater hoses are always open no matter what the tstat is doing.......next year i am thinking of removing my fan.........I am not sure what will happen.these small engines run very cool.......

On my Aerostar, the temperature sender never indicated higher than the N. I replaced the thermostat with a genuine Motorcraft, it could reach the O or R. I replaced the gauge temp sender, now it reaches the M and stays there. You need to use OEM parts, the aftermarket junk just doesn't come close to the OE quality.

The type of radiator doesn't matter the t-stat keeps everything circulating in the block until the temp rises to the opening point of the t-stat. Either the t-stat is the wrong value or defective and a lot of new ones are defective. If you can borrow a infrared temp scanner check the temp at the neck of the thermostat housing it will be the hottest water coming out of the block it should be real close to thermostat value. I personally use only Motorcraft t-stats due to the quality problems with the other brands.
