First off we can't check this engine hot as we can't get it running. I checked all cyclinders cold and they range from 100psi to 120psi. This motor has new rings and a valve job done about 4 months ago. Things got busy and we let it sit till now. It seems to want to hit every now and then but nothing consistant. It has an accel 2020 points elimanator kit and an accel 8140 coil. I have tried turning the distributor 180 and still no go. I am worried that letting it sit so long was bad. I did pour some oil in the cyclinders and turned over before leaving sit. Any help would be great.
Sitting for a time should not cause a non-start. Most likely your problem is in the ignition. Pull a plug wire and stick a spare plug in it and lay it on the exhaust. Have someone crank the engine over and see if you get any spark at the plug. If not, that's your problem!
I checked that first thing. It has spark and will fire sometimes but not enough to run. I now remember why I went diesel lol. These old IDI engines are about as simple as it gets.
ok so whats the timing?
just to get it running make sure the rotor is pointed at the #1 plug wire on the dist cap (not the actual cylinder).
number one is forward passenger side.
you mentioned work done, ok was the carb rebuilt? are the bowls full?
did you foul the plugs on account of the oil in the cylinders?
Yes i rebuilt the carb. No the plugs are not fouled. I know how to set the timing to get it started and how to set it so it runs good lol. I think I am gonna pull the front back apart on it to check the timing chain/gears. My stepson helped with this engine (it is his and he better help). He put the chain and gears on and I didn't think to check his work. It may be off a tooth. If so I will take the blame for not checking it out. To his credit he is just getting started in this stuff. He is almost 22 but his dad never worked on anything so he didn't get any experiance till now.
wasn't saying you didn't (you never know on these forums).
just throwing ideas out there.
best of luck, and good for you helping your stepson. I had to figure this stuff out myself too.... having really crappy trucks makes you a good mechanic at some point.
Sorry bout that. As it turns out it was my fualt. I have been playing with diesels to long lol. I forgot that on a gasser the cylinder #s run in a row on the same bank lol. On the diesels they run odds on one side and evens on the other. After we got it to fire he has decided to give up on it as it needs alot of other parts and sell it to me. I am gonna put this body on my 88 frame and use the t18 tranny behind my 6.9. His lose is my gain.
