Which Way Does The Water Flow

This undoubtedly is a dumb question question but, which way does the water flow out of the radiator? Out to the engine from the top or out to the engine from the bottom?

My engine runs hot in traffic and the space available between the radiator and the front pulley only allow enough roof for an electric fan without a shroud. There is no fan on the engine. Since the fan can then only pull air though it's 16-inch diameter, I thought it would be best to mount it on the hottest part of the radiator. Therefore the question is; put it towards the top or towards the bottom.

In case it matters, it's a CHEVY 350.

in the top (hottest), out the bottom.. (coolest)

and check the thermostat for flow.. I spent months working on an overheat problem only to find that the thermostat didn't allow ENOUGH flow..

we put in just the top part of the stat (the hat, cut the rest off) and poof all the problems went away..

All my Fords have hot water at top flowing down to bottom of radiator where it's cooled off by then.

edit: unless it's crossflow

Gravity was widely used by Ford and other truck manufacturers! From top to bottom.

(opposite in your heater by the way)

Water is moved by the water pump. The pump pulls water through the lower hose from the bottom of the radiator, and pushes it into the engine where it flows around to come out past the thermostat in back into the top of the radiator.

The next question would be; why is your engine located so close to the radiator to not have room for a fan? There should be plenty of room. What is wrong? Is it something you can fix?

The radiator can't move forward because the bottom is up against the lower valance (if that's what it's called.)

I think I can use a partial shroud, that is one that covers the upper 17-inches of the radiator leaving the bottom 4-inches open. That will then move the center point of the shroud up and allow a 16-inch electric fan to fit above the front pulley. Or at least theoretically it will.

Do you have any pics of your radiator set-up?

don't let em push u around!.. I've got about 1 inch of clearance between the water pump pulley bolts and the edge of 2-12in electric fans mounted on the shroud, where the radiator is INSIDE the rad U.

Is your radiator set in the v-8 (rear) position or in the 6 cylinder (forward)position? Pix are in my gallery of my F-1/sbc/shroud setup with the short waterpump positioning. I am located in the V-8 position. You can relocate the radiator to the forward position by getting a 6 cylinder upper (in the hood) and lower (low in front of the radiator) air dams. I assume that is what you are calling a lower valence. the air dams pop up on ebay,
Blocking off the hood openings on an F-1 will result in higher operating temperatures.

While we're chatting about water.... How does the heater get plumbed?
I know that one hose connects to the water pump, and the other to the intake maniflod, but which one goes to the heater value (which way does the water flow), and which one goes direct to the heater core? Then of course which side of the heater core?

Ya, I know... it make a lot of sense to me too!

john, this is hand built.

the alternator bracket is from March. (655-30200)
I am using a stock crank pully from a mustang,
(I was worried that the underdrive wouldn't power the waterpump enough)
waterpump pulley from March (655-2004) the A/C compressor mount is from some kit I picked up off ebay,
but I have to move the lower mount to support the alignment.

I added to idler pulleys to the mix to add pulley coverage.
here is the belt routing. amd before I switched to the pulleys mentioned above
