Expalin to me how shift kits work?

I have a 96 F-250 and a 97 F-350 both with E40d's. The 96 has a B&M shift kit in it that I installed and it improved the shift greatly not to harsh but solid I did this to the truck 10 yrs ago! About a year ago I bought the 97 and this truck is mint with alot of extras done to it that the previous owner must have had done! Alot of which I have no clue what was done since it was bought from a dealer so I never got to ask the original owner what he had done to it! Noticed it has a shift kit, when I take off easy from a stop it shifts firm which I like!! But if I hammer down it is very harsh which I have no problem with but I dont understand how the truck knows when it should have nice shifts to aggresive shifts? I am guessing it has to do with RPM and pump speed? Am I on the right track? Please educate me!!

The transmission is computer controlled. The computer knows how far you've pressed the go pedal, how fast the engine is running, how much power the engine is making, etc. From all of that data it determines what pressure to use to make each shift.

A shift kit affects how the valve body supplies pressure to the clutches. It can increase the pressure from where the computer commands it.
