Just purchased first Excursion...
It's a 2000 V10 2WD. It is a one-owner, exceptionally clean, well-documented example with 68,000 miles. I intend to use it to tow an 8,000lb travel trailer.
It has the tow package and a 44 gallon fuel tank. Is the 44 gallon tank standard?
Is it more likely the truck has 4:30 gears or 3:73? I realize there is likely a code somewhere on the vehicle that indicates gearing, but I haven't taken delivery yet. If it has 3:73, I want to swap to 4:30. It has the stock 265 tires.
Finally, when I change the oil for the first time, what oil do you guys recommend I use? I will use synthetic, if that is the best.

Side note...you said you haven't taken delivery of the vehicle yet...they use that term in a lot of CL scams..you buying it off craigslist by any chance?

Congrats Johnny,
I do believe the 44 gallon tank is standard with the v10 (don't know about the diesel's they may be 38s)
According to the manual the EXs came with 2 different gear ratio's the more standard is the 3.73s for a towing range of 10,000# 2WD or 9,600# 4WD, or the 4.30s for a towing range upto 11,000#. You can look on the pumpkin and there will be a metal tag which will tell you what you have. Also for the 3.73s the GCVW is 17,000# and the 4.30s GCVW is 20,000#
Ford recommends 5w20 in the truck, I use synthetic 5w20 and it seems to work well.
Also I just traded my old TT in on a new one . It's dry unloaded weight weight is 8,500# and I am probably around 9,600 to 10,000# loaded. I have no trouble pulling it with my 3.73s but will still upgrade to the 4.30s as my trailer max is 11,100#. I'm just not going to like my mpg very much

Good luck with your new ride.
Sorry Mark, did not see you had already stated there was a metal tag on the front axle. My bad, they are on the rear axle also.

As for the oil. I use the Rotella full synthetic from WalMart. Just make sure that you use a Motorcraft filter. I know with the diesel there are issues with aftermarket filters. Not sure about the v10.
Congrats on your purchase.
If you have questions ask I'm sure someone here will know the answer.
Also if you will post us a picture of your truck.
