Edge Evolution/Insight - now temp questions

Well I took the plunge and bought a tuner, an old style Edge Evolution. Not the fancy display CS or CTS. Now I know everyone swears by the SCT's, but I'm not actually using mine as a tuner. Turns out that the old tuner is cheaper than the old Insight and does the same thing.

Reason I bought it though was because I feel my cooling fan comes on a lot as of late and it isn't even that hot out. Today the weather was 71 degrees and my coolant temp got to 205 and oil temp to 213. Seems high to me. I had the dealer check it out and they say everything is normal, AC causing the cooling fan to kick in. The terrain is pretty level and these temps were reached on the off-ramp after a 15 mile trip at 65 mph. Does this sound normal? I have a King Ranch with the automatic climate controls, interior temp set at 71 degrees. Any comments regarding this would be appreciated.

I would get a verification of the temps from another source if possible....like IDS at the same time you are reading it with yours to see if the readings match. It's a little higher than I would like to see my truck, but it's perfectly acceptable for a diesel.

I wish someone would have a chart or something showing a temp range for a given ambient. The EGR and oil coolers were replaced a couple of months back, along with the water pump and front cover.

Those temps sound fair to me. And if you just had the coolers rebuilt/replaced, I think we can rule those out. The fan running too much does not sound right. Mine certainly won't run just because the AC is running. I assume you were not towing at the time you discussed above.

I would ask them to run a test on your fan clutch. And if they didn't change your thermostat when they did the coolers, I would stick a new one in there. You can do that yourself easily.

But most importantly I would hitch up your 5'r and take a drive. Note your temps then, and be sure to look at your trans temp. Because that one will cause your fan to run as well.

Bottom line, those ECT and EOT should not cause your fan to run. I don't start to hear my fan until my ECT hits 216-217, and when I hear it start that temp drops off a cliff fast.

Thanks for the feedback Bpounds. I was actually already planning on taking the trailer out. The thermostat was replaced when the last work was done on her. I drove her again a little today and noted the fan coming on at 210 degrees for EOT. ECT are well within the 15 degree range. What's the best way to clean the radiators? Don't really care to evac the AC system just to get in there in do some proper cleaning. The radiators look clear, but how do you really tell?

Here is a thread I started last year when I wanted to clean my cooling stack:

The guys here had a lot of good comments. Worth reading the entire thread I think.

Thanks for the thread, but I already did all that - actually own a fin comb. I don't see anything plugging up anything, but I figure it wouldn't hurt to give it a rather thorough cleaning. I'm wondering if the fan operation can have anything to do with the latest flash. Got the latest flash in December.

How do you like your Insight?

The Insight is good. I'm guessing it is just like the Evolution you have, without the capability to write to the vehicle. Did you get the software with yours to setup the screens? I prefer setup using the software, BUT if you do it that way the unit cannot guide you to active PID's versus inactive. The only way you can know that a PID is not available is to load it up and then go plug it into the vehicle and test it. They could stand to improve that.

I can't say if the flash would change the fan. I didn't get the new flash, and at this time I have decided not to.

Above I noted that my fan does not come on until 216-217°F, but I should qualify that statement a little. That temp is about where I start to hear it, but I'm pretty sure it is moving some air before that, and that those temps are just where it really starts to roar. And of course everyones hearing is different too, and mine isn't so great any more. The point being that the fan is variable speed, not just on/off. The dealer IDS computer has the ability to command a certain fan speed and monitor the response. I don't know of any way for us to test them in the driveway.

Bismic just posted a table in another thread "Temps?". According to that table 195 - 210 is severe service. Can't see driving empty on a flat highway as severe. The truck is tentatively booked in at the dealer on the 8th. I've heard the roar a few times, always empty. That's what's making me think that it's not normal. Hopefully they can get to the bottom of it.

Haven't completely hooked up the Evolution yet. Basically just plugged it into the OBDII port. Don't really need EGT's since I won't be using any of it's programming features. Basically just bought it to figure out what's up with my cooling fan. The software they sent doesn't really do anything but check for the latest tunes and/or firmware updates. All the parameters can be programed in the truck and it only gives you the ones that are available. It does look identical to the older Insights. I looked at the new ones but if I wanted flames or lightning on my gauges I would go dig up my 5 year olds Transformer sticker book.
