I hate to go all technical on this, but I wonder if the pump is driven off the front of the crank? You're not supposed to do that, but I've seen boats with prop drive off the front, too. Doesn't seem to cause any problems, but...
well most live hyd pumps run off front balancer where i work we beeen running off crank sense the early 70's. on dump trucks, from factory graders. you have to align the shaft so it dont vibrate.
Cement trucks do as well. John Deere tractors come to mind, also. I was driving a 4650 MFWD down a road pulling a chopper and dump wagon when it threw the crank to pump couple. No steering, brakes, tranny, etc.
Yeah, like I said, there are many examples, big truck engines must be designed for it (I'm sure tractor engines are). But I saw a thread on an engine design forum to the effect that "most" car engines can only take about 30 HP load off the front of the crank without breaking it off. A fire truck pump might easily take all the power that flatty can put out. Then again, flatties are very special!
48ford coe that would be a good tuck for you it seems to have a crew cab and a big tank to haul extra gas,and I bet it has a place on the back for guys that are forgotten,to jump on and hang on. I know not funny.
Most fire engines I've seen that use a front mount pump aren't able to pump while moving, only while stationary, all the HP/torque directed to the pump. Perhaps this would minimize damage to the crank ?
I think the problem is the size of the crank at the front -- much smaller diameter than the flywheel end.
I can't think why you'd want to pump while moving anyway?! Have to have some really long hoses! Can you imagine what a dog a heavy F-6 with a 239 would be if also driving a 50 HP water pump??

If you look at the bottom puller you will see a drive shift for my pump on my F-7 fire truck.
