My 05 6.0 psd excursion was showing under 13 volts with
my insite gauge, it comes up to 13.1 to 13.3 after a short while. does anybody know if the regulator is built in to the alternator? Ive checked both batterys, separately & voltage is about 12.6, thanks in advance.
Most likely it is built into the back of the alternator. See if you have 2 sets of wires. One thick single wire goes from the top of the alternator to the battery, the other is a harness attached to the back with 3 smaller wires attached. The harness is the one that attaches to the voltage regulator.
thanks, do you know of anybody who has just replaced the regulator. my voltage starts low 12.65 & after 5 min climbs to 13.25-13.75 it might be ok,
but a lot of people on this site worry about low voltage frying parts!
if you know what you're doing it can be replaced, if you don't, you run the risk of having a lot of useless shiny parts...that being said, I'd use it as a good chance to get a new, more powerful one.
You should be reading over 14v with it running, with a minimal draw from accessories, even with everything possible on, you should be over 13.5...
I would go with a reman. alternator as well. Not sure where you could just pick up a voltage regulator. Would be a pain in the proverbial a** to replace just the regulator. You have to pull the alternator anyways if you do either. Replacing just the voltage regulator involves additional steps. Who knows, maybe your bushings in the current alt. are going.
You might as well replace the alt. I think you will agree after you get a price on a regulator and no telling what else you will need.
You should do something soon or one bad alt., will turn into a bad alt. and 2 bad batteries.
I'm curious to know what brand of alternators everybody here prefers..? A lot of them out there from what I've seen are re-manufactured units. Would it be a better idea to go with a brand new alternator if there is any available?
I bought from from DB Engineering. I found a thread on another forum of a guy who went through two replacements from a parts house, a DC Power alt. and then got the DB Engineering one and loved it. I also have a lot of crap on my Ex...two fuel pumps, two amps, DVD, soon to have a winch, etc. I would also recommend thinking about replacing the starter if it is old... I had a starter that still worked but would turn over slow and it ate batteries b/c it was drawing such a high load...
The DB Engineering alternator is not cheap but it's been great. I didn't want to worry about it so I splurged.
