I am ordering a F250 and I want to get it right? I now have a 2001 F150 5.4, 4X4 Off road package 265-70-17 tires and 3.55 gears, 19000 miles so I don't drive it alot. I have always disliked the mileage and performance of this setup. I will not be towing much and the max around 7000 lbs. I will be ordering a 6.2L 4X4 and 275-70-18's my plan was to go with 4.10's but they are not available keeping in mind most of my driving is around town and two lane country roads, with little or no load in the bed, would I get better gas mileage with the 4.30's or the 3.73's? I always thought getting the F150 rolling with the 3.55's was the major cause of the bad mileage. But with the low gear of the new 6 speed and the double overdrive I am confused on which way to go. I realize I don't even need a F250, but I really like the 2011's. Buy the way I have been reading on this site for days and really like all the good information.
Thanks
I'd go with the 4.30s. The consensus around here seems to be that gear ratio has a minimal effect on MPG. Around town the 4.30s might actually help your MPGs. I have the exact same F150 setup as you do except a 2000 and I agree that the 3.55s really suck.
In the future my trucks will always have the deepest gearing available.
I'd go with with the 4.10 or 4.30's. Keep in mind that the SD is going to be heavier so mpg's may or may not be any better, but the towing platform will be greatly improved. I think you will be quite happy moving up to a 250.
The only option for the 6.2l is 3.73s or 4.30s. For me I only would ever consider the steeper 4.30s. Chances are your mpg with 4.30s will be very similar as 3.73s but you will get better performance with the 4.30s.
I have a 2005 F350 5.4L with 4.10 gears. I runs well but could be better with 4.30 gears. In rare instances, I have seen people state that they want lower gears but the vast majority of people want higher gears.
My 2 cents
You will want 4.30s in the Super Duty 6.2L gas trucks with the new 6 speed trans. If there were less gears in the tranny then it might be a different story.

i thought they only were coming out with 3.42 or 3.55 something along those lines?
The 6.7l will be available with the 3.31 and 3.55 gears. The 6.7l has a massive amount of torque so it can pull the shallower gears which helps it get better mpg. The 6.2l on the other hand is a completely different beast with nowhere near the torque of the 6.7l, especially down low.
Well I have been waiting on July 6th to see what Ford is coming out with for incentives I'm going to the dealer today hopefully to place an order for the new truck.
Thanks
