I just picked up my first ford f100 (302/C4) a few days ago. I was a little bit suckered by the PO, and bought a 'daily driver' that is looking worse all the time. I just pulled the oil fill cap to change the PCV, and there's all kinds of grit/rust chunks sitting on in the head. The dipstick was clean fresh oil, and the the truck runs really well so far. It doesn't move because the tranny started slipping so bad on the way home I could barely get it in my driveway.
Since the engine runs fine*, what's the best way for me to get all the grit out of the heads without endangering the motor? Remove them and have them hot-tanked? Is it just a time bomb and I should start looking for a replacement?
I would pull the valve covers first and see what the heads look like. Maybe the junk is just debris from the filler cap due to sitting a while. If the heads are all rusted and gritty, it may also be from sitting for a long time, (condensation), or there may have been a coolant leak that caused it, which could be bad.( head gasket, cracked head or block) But if is just underneath the filler cap, it might not be too serious. Just clean it up and run it.
