I had a question asked to me the other day and didn't know the answer so I thought I would pose it to some of the SD gurus. I have a friend of mine who is just beginning to mod his 01 SD, he is starting with the basics, exhaust, intake, and the sort, but he asked me how much HP over stock are the split shots are good for, and I don't really know so I thought I would throw it out and ask............. how much HP are the stock split shots good for?? thanks
Yep -- 310ish on stock oil, maybe 330-340 with more oil. The issue with splits is that they are very thirsty with the HP oil, so the stock pump runs out of oil before the stix are maxed out. Going with just stage 1 singles only gives you an extra 15cc or so of fuel, but the singles use MUCH less oil, so they can be used to their fullest extent. That should get you about 360. Stage 2s gets you close to 400, depending on the size, Hybrids start at around 400 and go up from there depending on which ones you get and how much turbo you have to feed air to 'em... You can run stock oil up to ~250cc hybrids or so. After that, a mod'ed pump or big oil is needed.
thanks guys! he works with a guy driving an excursion who is boasting 500hp on stock sticks, which I KNEW was but I was unsure about the threshhold for the split shots

I would bet him a few hundred $$$ and offer to pay for the Dyno. You have a no loose situation here.
I am going to try to pull info out of the fog that is my brain as I seem to recall that the stock splits are good for about 350-360HP max no matter what oil or turbo you run. If memory serves that is due to the split shot and CC flow rate which I think is like 160CC. Feel free to correct me if I am wrong.
