need a history lesson

I am looking at a project truck that is for sale it is an 86 6.9 w/ manual trans. The body and frame are in good shape he prevoiusly had put a NP 205. The wild talk is about putting a mechanical cummins 12v in it.

I was hoping that someone could run down the years and changes the the IDI went thru like 6.9 to 7.3 spefically I am looking for transmission intechanges.

The 6.9/7.3 have a unique bell housing all to themselves!

NP435, BWT18, BWT19 will all fit the 6.9/7.3 with the proper Diesel bell housing ... All 4 speeds

ZF5 5 speed has an integral bell housing, they make 3 styles for the Ford, SBF, BBF and Diesel, thus it must come off a Diesel.

-Enjoy

If the truck is complete as is, there is no need to follow through on the current owners plan to swap a Cummins into it, or am I missing something?

`87 was the last year for the 6.9, then from `88 to `941/2 it was the 7.3. All transmissions used behind both diesels should interchange between them.

The truck is complete. From what I was told is that 10 years ago when it was put in the barn it had some major oil consumption and was getting tired. i am sure the 3.55 gears didn't help much in the get up and go catergory. Like I said before a engine swap is still just wild talk. locating the 6.9's problem and correcting it is still not out of the question

In my opinion crazy "what if and can that be done" sessions is one of the best parts of FTE, mainly becuase some one has probably already done it and can tell you about it.

It all depends upon why you want to swap, and what you expect it to do. Sure you could do the swap, but if it is all for mileage, you probably won't be overly impressed with the cost of doing the swap vs how long it takes to pay for it. It also depends how much you buy vs how much you can do on your own. The Cummins will require a new adapter plate, driveshafts, motor mounts, and a bit of fabricating after all that to make it all fit. If it were 2wd it would be much easier, but 4wd is definitely doable, just takes more work and fabricating.

The plan of attack I would take would be to try to find out what the problem with the 6.9 is and go from there.Sometimes it isn't actual consumption, but leakage that is the problem. One of our 84's nearly broke off the oil sender, I caught it before we had a gusher, but it was leaking heavily before hand, and my sister was running it. I took time at one point and discovered that the sender tube was cracked. Main seals tend to leak on these, and sometimes you do get loose valve stems. Another way to lose oil with these is a CDR problem.

I have one right now that needs the oil cooler swapped, as there is a hole in the outer tube leaking oil on it too.
