I am enjoying the '93 F-250 I just bought but I do have a question. After parking the truck I get an alarm when I open the door like leaving the headlights on or key in the ignition. Any ideas?
This is a good question because I have the same problem with my 91 F250. After I shut it off and remove the key I get one beep when I open the door. I have no idea why so I'm hoping someone else does. Thanks in advance.
One beep that continues as long as the door is open? What happens when you come back to the truck and open the door? Do you have any aftermarket electronics in the truck? Any switches that you don't know what they do? Any other malfunctions?
I get one Ding when I open the door after shutting off the truck. You know the Ding Ding Ding Ding noise you get when you leave your headlights on or your keys in the ignition, I get the same noise but only one Ding. I haven't ever noticed it when entering the truck, only when leaving. I don't have any aftermarket electronics only a few auxiliary lights. This seems to be the only electronic porblem with the truck. My friends give me strange look when it makes the Ding and I tell them it is just a warning to let me know that I opened the door.
I've had the same problem with my '93 F-150, and upon investigating the problem, I found out that the key bezel (the silver part that sticks out of the ignition switch) has a tendency to come loose from the switch itself, and this is the part that triggers the audible alarm. If your only getting one ding, it may not have reached the same point as mine (yet). I can't say for sure if this is the problem, but apparently ford is aware of this, and their recommendation is to replace the switch. Great. For now I just jiggle the bezel if it does this, and it stops. Come spring time I'll probably replace the switch, but it's not way up there on my things to do to it list.
Now it's starting to make sense to me. My key switch is so worn out that for the past 10 months I haven't had to use a key to start my truck. I think I'll just live with the ding because there are many other things that need fixed first. Thanks.
That's not the switch; it's called the lock cylinder. The switch is under the dash. If you have tilt steering or any '92-up truck, it's REALLY easy to change the lock cylinder out. If you look at the bottom of the column just below the lock cylinder, you'll find a small hole (smaller than all the others on '92-up). Turn the key to RUN and push a small probe into the hole enought to push the 3/32" pin inward about 1/8" and the lock cylinder will pull straight out of the column. New ones come with a key in them set to RUN already, so just insert it and turn it to ANY other position and it will lock itself in by pushing the pin back out.
If you have a pre-92 NON-tilt, you have to pull the steering wheel to get to the pin.
Wow! Thanks to everyone who posted a reply. After tinkering a bit I have found my situation to be exactly like Yelrihseam suggested. If I wiggle the bezel it stops. And if I wiggled it to the right place it stays stopped. So now my question after reading evrything is do I need to replace the switch or the lock cylinder?
Thanks again.
