Someone was saying something about when the radiator gets low it builds to much pressure at the egr through the egr cooling system,i didn't understand that.
1) less issues, I have for the last 2 years now made more money on 6.4 repairs then on 6.0
2) the 6.0 runs good when modded to a reasonable level. the 6.4 runs better though.
3) 6.4 is not any beefier. in fact it's a rod bending beast when the egr cooler fails. Dont ask how many #8 rods Ive hung, or short blocks replaced.
4) you dont think a 6.0 will pull a house?
with all I have seen and had to fix Ill take my lumps with a 6.0 all day long. sorry just my .02
How can you tell when a egr cooler is failing? what are the symtoms?

If your radiator gets low you will start overheating thus creating more pressure in the cooling system. It is one complete cooling system, not two independant systems.
I have a 2003 6.0 with 160K on it and it has had every electronic module replace, 3 alternator and 7 injectors. Still when it is running good it pulls great. Most of the issues were covered under warranty early on. I do have some kind of issue now with a misfire and low power shortly after filling up. Not sure what it is. I replaced the fuel filters but problem still there. The problem is the high cost of diesel fuel here.
Lots of good points so far. I have had 6.0's, 6.4's and currently have a 6.4 and a 6.7. I put about 160,000 hard working(towing) miles on my 6.0's and had nothing but a couple of minor issues with them. They were great trucks and run bone stock.
One thing for you to definately consider is the fact that it doesn't sound like you will be working the truck hard on a regular basis. I know for sure that my 6.4 runs and works so much better when it is worked hard on a regular basis. My 6.0's ran well regardless of that fact.
All trucks are going to have some issues so I'd suggest an extended warranty if you get one with over or near 100K on the clock.
Another important point is that the 6.4's require a little moe maintenance than the 6.0's. Oil and filter every 5K and Fuel filters every 10K without fail especially running stock.
With what you are going to use the truck for my vote would probably go to the 6.0 however, if you don't mind the loss in mpg's(I get an average of 15miles/gallon empty with my current 350 6.4 and 10miles/gallon towing a 24' 10K work trailer) then the overall truck is a little nicer(here's the opinion part) with a ton more creature comforts. The 6.4 trucks do feel more solid and stable to me and I am much more comfortable towing in my 6.4's than I was in my 6.0's.(more opinions)
