Hubs won't unlock...sometimes.

My hubs won't unlock when I switch off 4WD.

It is even an PITA to get them to unlock when I turn the manual lock back and forth. I usually have to do it 3-4 times while moving the axle shaft back and forth.

Odd thing is, once the right side unlocks, the driver's side unlocks no problem. But I cannot unlock the driver's side first.

Damn axle demons!

So......looks like I get to take stuff apart!!!!!!!! What should I look for?

How many miles do you have on the truck? I have seen similar problems on other post's but nothing on the fix. Some guy's can't even get their hubs to turn. I now check & turn the hubs on both of our 02's monthly just to try to keep them free.
I think between the hubs freezing up & the vacuum operation on the hubs cutting out, (other hub problems), people are going to eventually replace them with tradional hubs like Warn.
Jake.

Hey Monsta.
My truck has been in the dealer shop 4 times due to hubs not working properly.A couple times it was the vacume sulinoid not working properly(air leaks). The other times the hubs were just freezing up.You could probably take the hubs apart yourself and grease them. Then check for air leaks.Buy the way,I only have 32,000 on my truck.

People have talked about greasing the hubs in the past. My question would be, are the hubs lacking grease from the get go or is this something that needs to be done on a regular basis? Maybe grease every 25,000 or so? Jake.

It almosts seems like they need to be greased once a year.Im gonna talk to the mechanic at my Ford dealer and see what he says and what type of lube to use.

Are you experiencing this while your "truck" is stationary?

If so I wouldn't be too concerned. The hubs like to see a little rotation to disengage and or engage. Not much, but some.As a matter of fact it has been my experience that if I have pressure on them from being in 4wd and unlock the hubs and disengage the 4wd shift lever while sitting still it is best to roll back a foot or so to disengage everything.
Also on that note if I'm driving along in 4wd (hubs locked)and disengage the 4wd shift lever the front axle will continue to pull until it experiences some coast or deceleration.

Just my .02

Monsta ,what is happening most likely is water and dirt are getting in past the o-ring seal!

If you do take it apart you must replace the o-ring !
a suggestion while your in there chk your wheel bearing for any roughness or play ,there should be none with these types of hubs (supposedly a sealed unit ) but water and dirt can enter from both sides of the hub .

I agree 100%. This is the same for myself reguardless of the type or year of 4x4 vehicle. Auto hubs from yesteryear were deactivated/activated in a similar fashion. Even noticable in my 99' Expi A4WD to an extent.

Hubs won't unlock...sometimes.

It does not unlock not matter the circumstance. Cold - hot - rolling - not rolling etc.

I can electronically switch back to 2WD, drive around, go backwards and forward and it won't unlock until I manual move the hub lock back and forth a few times while manually turning the axle shaft.

No biggie really... I'm gonna sell it, buy a PSD 2WD Excursion with a locker here soon...

BTW, it has 77K on it.

That's a nice truck!

I spoke too soon, I guess. My wife and I are seriously contemplating going back to Hawaii (The Big Island) to live. I've taken all the winters that I can take. I figured it'd be cheaper to sell my X and get another over there. A 2WD diesel makes a lot of sense.

But I digress...I may just take mine after-all! I'm waiting on quotes. I kinda hope I can take it as I'd hate to start all over with the mods. But then again...

And for you FORTY! What's up with your "Yellow" fixation? Been eatin' a little too much yellow snow!?
