Cold Air intake on Expedition.

Anyone equipped their Expedition with a Cold air intake? If so what did you see the gas milage due? Was a noticeable difference in power felt? Thinking about putting one on my 04 Expedition 5.4 for just a little bit better throttle response and possible better gas milage.

The stock system flows more than enough for the engine. You will get more intake noise and a lighter wallet, thats about it.

"more intake noise and lighter wallet" That should be on a T-shirt. Guess I could just KN filter it and Swiss Cheese the Air Box.

I wonder if your intake is still the same or similar to my '99? On my truck, it pulls from the fender well, outside the engine compartment, and it uses a large conical filter.

The only change I made on mine, and it was probably just out of curiosity, was I enlarged the hole at the end of the filter housing from about 2" to 3". Search Gotts intake for details.

With an intake like this, punching holes in it just lets in more hot air. The paper filter is WAY better than the K&N, just buy a good quality filter.

Weighing in on BG's post.
I did the same thing with keeping the factory cleaner set up but replacing the snorkel to the fender with a 3" pipe and it made a big difference plus a nice throaty sound. Easy to do too and cost about $12 for everything

Ditto the waste of time and money. No mileage boost, no change in throttle response.

Ya I received an AFE the dry filter one as a gift. Don't think that theres a difference, you just here the engine breath more.

OK, but there are plenty of stock trucks with those miles to. Did I miss the point somewhere?

Yes, the mods had no adverse affect on the lifespan of the truck.

If you really wanna see a boost in power, a CAI alone won't do it, mainly because the exhaust mainfolds are too restricting. Do a little search on this site and you'll see.

So...they don't help, but they don't hurt. Doesn't seem like a very good reason to spend $500 to me.

The real reason it doesn't do anything is that the engine doesn't need anymore airflow than the stock intake can provide. Cams, heads, exhaust, would all need dramatically higher flow capabilities before the intake would help.

I have Volant Col Air Unit on my truck...

It' a nice piece but I would have never bought it with my own money(gift.)
I noticed a slight increase in throttle response and maybe a scant increase in MPG, but that was probably due to the low restriction air filter...
