So, years ago at my wifes parents house, there is a road that we go down to get to the lake. there has always been a few vehicles there under tarps..
I finally looked under them and found this truck.
I got approval last night to bring the truck to my house so I can start bringing her back to life. supposedly she ran about 4 years ago.
Now comes the fun stuff right?
I think I am going to keep it mostly stock, I was going to rat it out, but shes in pretty good condition, so we will see what happens when I start into her.
Should be a fun project, with approval from the CFO, I can also pour the pad for the new shop that I will be building around this truck.
Lots of good info on this site..... I am sure I will have many questions, as this is my first project of this scale. I have restored some old Triumphs and motos, but never a car/truck.
Hey welcome to FTE. Looks like you have a pretty good truck to start with. You will find some very good people here that will help you in a heart beat. So jump in and hang around a while. The search feature here is pretty good as well. You can search by about anything and get something. What part of the country are you in? Welcome
I am in a small town called Meadow Vista, about 40 miles east of Sacramento CA, up in the foothills.
So, is this motor stock? can anyone tell by the pics?
It is a Y Block now whether it is of the 272 or 292 or even 312 variety I cant say. You are close enough to Sacramento you ought to make a visit to Sacramento Vintage Ford. They have an excellent catalog for these trucks and should be able to help you out.
WOW! what a great find. Most of us would give up a precious part or two for a starter that complete, clean and solid. Be sure to get the ownership paperwork with the state taken care of before putting any money into it, you wouldn't want to get it all fixed up, find out it was reported stolen or has a lein on it later and have it confiscated. See the thread about guy getting his truck back some 30 years after reporting it stolen. DON'T go to one of the title mills that advertise in some magazines, the state is wise to that ruse. Do it right and legal.
it was my wifes grandpas (passed away some years ago).
can I tell by the vin # the motor type?
I also found the original owners manual in the glovebox. pretty cool, that was the point when I kind of decided to keep her stock.....maybe...
There should be a plate on the driver's door sill that will tell you what engine the truck was originally built with. These early engines were not known for longevity tho, and many were replaced with whatever was available and fit when the original expired.
awesome, I will start using the search feature more. I am sure I will have many questions coming soon.
by the VIN it is a 272ci. built in Richmond VA. nice.
You'll love the sound of the y-block, there really is nothing else like it.
For parts I would recommend looking at Mid-Fifty, they specialize in parts for the 53-56 Ford trucks. NPD is also a great place. Be sure to have the title in hand (not on the way) before you start to spend any money or really do anything as previously mentioned. If it doesn't have one and you have to go through all the work of getting one then you really don't want to spend any money on it till it goes through, who ever has the title owns it, weather it be the guy you bought it from or some guy who lost it 50 years ago and just found it again in a drawer...
There was no Ford plant in Richmond, VA. Ford had a plant in Richmond, CA (by Oakland). Since you're in the Sacramento area, the truck would have been assembled at that plant. RH is the code for the plant in your data tag. My 52 Panel was also built in Richmond.
welcome, try getting it started before you tear into it. Make it safe and reliable then you can tear into it... Why was it parked? will the motor spin at all? drop some oil or marvel mystery oil in the cylinders first and let it sit. try to turn it with a socket on the crank and go from there.. who knows it may have only needed a battery..
