I don't think your observation of the diesel culture, or at least most of us here, could be further from the truth. You are comparing two completely different vehicles that serve different purposes.
Most of us that own these trucks use them for work, and don't have the time to fiddle around with software to get them to do what we want.
Those that own a "5.0" (not even sure what all your terminology means) use it simply as a mode of transportation. I could make the assumption you go to an 8-5 job, get home and have nothing else to do, so have time to play with computers. As for myself, I get about 2-3hours at night to spend with my family, average 3-4 hrs of sleep a night. I work two jobs, sometime 3, to keep things going and use my truck to make things work. I can't take the time to play around with it.
I think the assumption you are making about others here are getting them defensive. Many have shared why tunes cost what they do, you just chose not to acknowledge it for whatever reason. As I said before, you have 3 options, most of us chose a custom tuner because it was what works for us. If you want to write your own tunes, go for it. Everyone here is more than interested with what you can come up with. Just don't write everyone off as having more money than they know what to do with and that spending it on custom tunes is bad. Provide us with a better option and you'll be then next minute-millionaire!
farmboy you are more than likely correct as your right about a work truck being a work truck and thus its easier to just buy rather than try and figure it out.
anyways most of my questions have been answered by either cleutus or
Dian there at DP thus i will no longer be asking or posting regarding this as and if i have any more questions for tuners i will email them off board and if they allow me i will post up the responses for other newb's to see and learn from, that is what i am trying to get, just a good detailed description of what i am paying for when it comes to the tune.
I'm with you, wanting to know what is being done to make the truck run like it does. I think the general impression is that you don't think the tuners/tunes are worth what they are asking. Most of us cherish our custom tuners, for what they can do to our trucks and their service they provide. So if someone questions what or how they do things, we can get defensive.
I tried watching as Tony live tuned my truck. I understand generally what it takes to make it do other things, but after watching him and looking at his computer screen, I'll leave it to him. It looked like a bunch of matrixes with nothing but numbers. I get that same response when I go about setting up our GPS/yield monitor from my dad.

You didn't really expect that tony, Jody, Jonathan, etc, etc can teach you what they are doing and the subtle nuances in the hour they are with you, did you? I don't. Just like Brian building a trans. I could have stood there, watched him, wore my dark glasses so they glazing of the eyes are not apparent. Even if he were to explain exactly what he is doing, there is no way I will understand it all in a day. Obviously, they don't learn what they want from Cliff Notes or "trans building for dummies" or "ECM tuning for dummies".

I never said I did expect to learn everything they know, I said I just "watched". I asked a few questions, but let him do his work.
I see most of the questions have been responded to if not answered and I'm not able to add much more other that I did run an off the shelf tuner for a while. It was better that stock, but until I got my DP tuner, I really didn't know what I was missing. I guess I never really thought about the cost of each tune, the way I looked and continue to look at it is that I was paying for all the hours spent perfecting that particular tune, the equipment to do that and the continued support I receive for that tune. I am pretty sure if I found a computer savvy person and ask them to build me a tune for my truck, including all the equipment needed to do it safely and right, it would cost way more the $45.00. I wish I did know more about how the tuning works, but then again, I wish I new how may dang Droid works. Guess some things I just have to be satisfied to pay someone else to do the work. Good luck on you search and I hope you find what you are looking for. I'm just going to stick with Jody and Diane, been working for my needs for years now and if you are interested, I now have 12 tunes plus no start. Would have more but just can't think of anything else I could possibly need.
