5.4L sparkplugs

I have a 2000 250 5.4L and it's running rough. The engine is sputtering under light acceleration and the truck shudders at idle. I think (hope) it's the sparkplugs. I've heard that there's a problem with a certain plug blowing itself out taking the threading with it. What should I look for? I've also heard it's no fun trying to get to them. Any advice would be appreciated.

Also, my check engine light is NOT on. I have 36,300 miles and my warranty expired on 01/03/03, so I don't think the dealership will take it under warranty.

It wouldn't hurt to check the plugs. It's not too difficult being a V8. It's the two raer cylinders on the V10 that are a PITA.

I would also check the wires going to the "coil-on-plug" coils.

Make sure you MAF sensor appears clean. (The wire inside the intake tube when the filter is removed.)

The IAC could be acting up too. Here's a pic of where that is. Removing and cleaning could help.

I've had this problem with the 4.6 and 5.4. I fixed it by replacing the aftermarket plugs and plugwires with Motorcraft. In speaking with the service department at the dealership, they related this is a common problem with the Modular engines. The coil-on-plug wires eat themselves regularly. Aftermarket wires will sometimes work, but are prone to failure on these engines. Check your plug wires for resistance.

Just my opinion

Does the Super Duty w/5.4L suffer from the same A/C hose issue as the F150? On the lighter trucks, one of the A/C system hoses "drips" directly onto one of the coil-packs. Eventually, this causes the pack to fail.

The 5.4 in the sd has the heater hose sometimes leaks on the pass side and drips on the last plug on that side .you can chk the resistance of the coils when changinging the plugs.

It might not be a bad idea to get the truck scanned for codes ,even if the mil light isn't on .
reason being is not all codes will post the light ,right away . you may be having intermitent codes and misfires .

There are over 10 different sensors required for these new engines to run correctly .

Forty jogged my memory.

There have been some reports here of owners having coils go bad.I know some had a code show up but I don't believe all of them did( have a code show up).

Don't mean to sound like an idiot, but I just crawled under the hood and there is alot of crap down there. I don't think they intended for anyone to ever access the sparkplugs. So, do I remove the covers, remove the coils, then find the sparkplugs? What am I looking for in a bad coil?

The missing is most apparent when lighly accelerating around 1500 rpms. At higher rpms, it's not noticable. I recently put a new IAC in it, so that's not the problem.
