Pull the #1 plug, put your finger over the hole, rotate the crank with a 15/16 socket, you'll feel the compressed air coming up and out of the hole as you approach TDC, when you don't feel anymore air, you're there. That will get you pretty close. If it were me, I'd pull the passenger side valve cover as well, to make sure both valves are closed. To determine that, the pushrod side of rockers will be in the down position.

For the oil pump, get your 1/4" socket set out. Grab about 1.5' of extensions. Put a 5/16" on the end of the extentions...duct tape it on, and rotate the oil pump until it's where it needs to be.

Why not just rotate the crankshaft until the mark on the balancer TDC lines up with the pointer?

Oil pump: just wiggle the distributor back and forth while inserting it.

got it ty for your help i ended up not being able to find my 1/4" socket extentions so i just got it lined up and with the distributor partially engaged hand cranked the motor until it dropped in place the valves were a great way to find out if i was on the compression stroke except i had to get a gasket to replace the one i messed up !!

That probably would have been the easiest way. Some times I guess I just over think things. But there's always the potential the balancer has spun, so I typically prefer a couple different confirmations.

Glad it worked.
