I have a 1975 Ford f-250 4x4 W/ 390, 4 Sp manual, Dana 60 and Dana 44.
My Dana 44 is Drums, closed knuckle and low pinion. I'm interested in doing the axle swap to a 78/79 Dana 44 open knuckle, high pinion, disc brake.
I know that its mostly a bolt up, with a few mods (tie rods and drive shaft) but I still have a few questions.
Its my understanding that the gear ratio will need to match my rear axle. So if I am lucky enough to find this new Dana 44, and it doesn't have the same gears, can I gut my 75 axle and swap them or are the different (high pin, low pin)???
And now I have a kingpin with a steering assist set up, will this cause problems on my swap? and whats the solution!?

No, high pinion and low pinion gears are cut different, they will not swap.
You should be able to make your steering work, though it may involve swapping brackets (and maybe welding) between the axles as the newer axle doesn't use the hydro assist that I think youre saying yours does. Might be a good time just to swap to the newer power steering as its generally preferred.
And x2 on the above, high pinion and low pinion use different gearsets. Figure out what axles you have and either find one thats the same, or if you find more desireable gears in the newer donor truck, go ahead and take the rear gears out of it!
