Are you guys saying that these ratios that happen to all have 12 or 10 teeth on the pinion use the exact same pinion gear? That don't work

Not at all. I know the pitch of the pinion teeth has to be adjusted to match the number teeth on the ring, and vice-versa. As well as occasionally the diameter or thickness.....

Whoo good, that would be bad, but that's how it reads. So why the talk about comparing tooth numbers, in the grand schime it doesn't really matter?

oh, in some previous post someone mentioned a 12 tooth pinion I think but I had only recalled seeing a 10 tooth 3.50 setup for 9", but dana used a 42-12.

not saying there isnt a part for a 42-12 9", I just dont have it...

There are some ratios and tooth counts where the same teeth contact again and again, like a 3.0 with 27-9 or 2.5 with 25-10 there's a term for this like tracking or something that I can't remember nor if it's a good thing or not, would have to do more reading on it, I forgot, but you sure don't see it much.

Anyway, like in your 3.5 example a 35-10 would contact the the same 2 pinion teeth with every 7th ring tooth again and again. Now that I think about this any rather even numbered ratio would "track" like that. So a 3.50 would and a 3.55 wouldn't, hmm.

Thinking about the math, it would be true of any ratio which when expressed as a fraction could have the denominator reduced lower then the ring gear tooth count. So a 3.50 as either 10/35 or 12/42 can be reduced to 2/7 and thus the same 2 pinion teeth contact every 7th ring tooth. But a 3.55(3.5454) is 11/39 which cannot be reduced and thus does not track.

I have heard the terms:
Pig
Pumpkin
Center Chunk

The original question was mine. I wanted to know exactly what it would take to swap my 8.8" for a 9" out of a van or truck. I have my answer back on the first page. But PLEASE keep going, I am learning more than I hoped for about Ford rearends! This is great information!

See, even the thread originated says we haven't "hijacked" his thread.
I too find this info enlightening and entertaining.....

I haven't been able to get back to the junk yard but hope to this weekend. If I don't find a 9" that will work for me I'm going after the 8.8 with the limited slip. I have a question about that.

Would the 2.47 and 3.55 ring gears use the same 19 tooth pinion gear?

Since the 8.8LS at the junk yard is in a van it won't fit. I was wondering if I could just pull the carrier (the guts) and drop it into my rearend without having to mess with the pinion.

I figured it wouldn't be easy. I guess I'll drag the whole rearend home.

Thanks!
