Hi - I'm new to FTE & I've found some very interesting info in the forums. My problem is our f250 diesel turbo is smoking terribly. Following your suggestions, we pulled the egr & cleaned it, used a cleaning treatment in the fuel for the injectors. I think the gas was bad the last time we filled up because of the smell. The smoke went from thick black to grayish-white & there's not as much while driving, but when we stop at a light - lots of smoke! It runs great, just too much smoke. Please help!

Sorry for the incorrect terminology - yes, I used diesel fuel. No,it doesn't run rough at all. Actually, it runs great. I'll ask about the coolant level. Noticed a new noise & was told it may be something wrong with the turbo. Was also told by the dealer that #2 injector was sticking & the motorcraft treatment would work fine to clear things up. Getting looked at later on today before any more repair attempts. I'll let you know how it goes. I'll tell Mr B what you said about the egr cooler. Thank you all.
Does it smell like unburned diesel fuel? Your injector might be leaking for some reason or another. Injector "cleaners", from what I've seen, only tend to "help" when the issues are fairly mild.
If it was bad fuel, then anything in the fuel delivery process could be compromised. Just depends on how bad the fuel was. If you believe that the fuel was bad, I would replace both fuel filters and drain the HCFM. If you haven't already done so.
I have the same problem. Mine only does it once in awhile. I am losing some coolant. It will do it one day for a few miles and then nothing for days. I thought sticky injector then EGR cooler. I have had the cooler replace about 20,000 miles ago. Only have 58,000 on the truck.

Did they do anyting to the oil cooler when they fixed your EGR cooler? If they didn't, then your ultimate problem could be that of the oil cooler and that's what is caused your multiple EGR cooler issues. If it is indeed the EGR cooler again.

Thanks for your quick reply Tex, I am looking at my invoice from Ford and dont see where they changed the oil cooler. They said they tested it and found no vacuum lose. It was under warranty at that time. Should they have changed it?
Now that it is out of warranty this is my bill and if it should have been that is wrong that they didnt. It was almost 2 years ago and I was wrong on the mileage it was 17,200 miles.

I would think so. Typically if the EGR goes bad, more times then not they should replace the oil cooler. It, however, does not work the other way around. If it is determined that your issues are once again an EGR cooler, then I would be highly suspicious of also having an oil cooler issue as well.
