transmission question?!?

transmission question?!?

i have a 1999 250sd 4x4. I have the 5.4 with the 4r100. some how i drained my tranny fluid instead of motor oil. ooopps. can i just fill it back up or do i need a shop to do it profesionally? if i can fill it back up do i need motocraft mercron like it says in my manual?

Yes fill it back up with new mercron fluid like in the manual, but now would be the time to change the trany filter too. You do need to change the fluid or you will be doing a trany job like i just had to do.

It doesn't need to be Motorcraft, but it needs to be MERCON or MERCON V. Ford changed MERCON V since your manual was printed, and stopped licensing MERCON.

You'll need about 5-6 quarts to fill the pan. The amount shown in the manual includes draining the torque converter and coolers, too. You add the fluid through the transmission dipstick tube.

How did you accidental drain the transmission instead of the engine oil?
