Alright, I know the picture isnt very good quality but hopefully someone will be able lto help me solve a problem. I am leaking brake fluid pretty bad and think I have found the culprit. Forgive me for my ignorance when it comes to naming some parts, this is somewhat new to me. Just below the master cylinder there is a part that hoses from the master cylinder connect to as well as an electrical switch. My best guess is a brake fail light switch but that is just a guess. Well that switch seems to be leaking pretty bad and wanted some advice on the part and possible fix. Thanks for your help and my apologies for the terrible picture, I will try to get others if it will help.
No picture needed. That is the brake light switch, which is part of the proportioning valve. It's purpose is to turn on the brake warning light in the dash when either the front or the back brakes fail and lose pressure.
Ok here are a few more pictures, but they are not great either, cant seem to get a good shot, but hopefully someone will be able to understand what I am getting at.
sorry one more question, I am on Rock Auto and I see a Brake Light Switch and a Brake Light Fail Switch, can you help me know which one I should order. Thanks
I thought the picture looked the same but I wasn't sure which one was right, I will be sure and order the right part. Thanks for the advise on the new install, I will be careful, I have already broken a couple things by being a little to aggressive.
If the switch is leaking, doesn't that mean the proportioning valve is leaking internally? The switch rides the detent of the differential valve rod inside the body of the proportioning valve. If the front brakes fail and lose pressure, the pressure of the back brakes should push the rod forward and activate the switch and vice versa, but fluid should not move past. Each end of the rod should be sealed, meaning there should be no fluid touching the switch inside. Fluid should not be able to be passed from the front to the back brakes and vice versa.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think replacing the switch is going to solve the problem. I would replace the proportioning valve and bleed the entire braking system.
I have a Ford P/N that was posted by a member on this site(numberdummy)to another member looking for part numbers. The P/N for the switch is:C8AZ2B264A
He said it was a current part with Ford. You could probably pick one up locally.Sorry about the wrong posting, hope this information will help you out.Let us know how the repair goes!I just saw fmc400's post and he has a strong point.I have read other posts that complain about that switch housing cracking and leaking.
