Factory specs were 2100 rpms but I have seen a few turned up as much as 27-2800. They would scream. LOL If you kept em around 2400 they would hold up pretty good.
The reason they sound like they are turning so fast is because they are two strokes. That means they fire everytime the piston comes up. So each piston fires every revolution instead of every second revolution like a four stroke. In other words they are firing twice as many times as a four stroke which makes em sound like they are turning twice as fast when in reality they are not.

And you better have your seat belt on, cause when they fall flat they will throw you through the windshield... Keep em wound tight and the can run pretty good until they shake themselves to pieces and fall apart of course thats after you've poured a few barrels of oil on the ground from them leaky piles O crap!
But yea, The do scream pretty awesome!
And I like them even better when they belong to someone else and I don't have to work on them!
I saw an old bus that was converted to an RV and I'm pretty sure it had a detroit in it. I could hear it when passing him. The dark grey haze from the smoke was visible from about 1 mile away looking ahead down the freeway where the bus was near the top of the next hill.
After seeing a few videos online and comparing that to the bus I saw in the flesh struggling to hold speed I have to wonder if detroits are even capable of running without significant amounts of visible smoke. I don't want to stop anyone from having a little fun and maybe even doing a repower if thats what they are after, but my IDI gets great fuel economy, idles completely smoke free (even in direct sunlight), Cruises smoke free, still has enough power to get out of its own way, and I don't suffer any hearing damage when cruising on longer trips.
Doesn't leak a drop of anything either.
I'm trying to figure out what the big deal is over these old buzzers.
