I need everyones help.
I want to buy a used F150 and it has a 4.6 v8. It has 91000 miles on it.
I have a 2005 diesel but want to add this to my fleet so I have a truck that I dont have to worry about getting dirty when I go ride 4 wheelers.
Take a look at this truck.
Is it going to be reliable to haul a 4 wheeler on long trips across the nation?
Is 91000 miles too much? Is it worn out? How much can it tow? It was a Enterprise rental truck and it seems in real good shape. It runs good and AC is cold. Is this motor a long lasting motor? Does it have a long life ahead of it?? Please give me all the info you have! haha
I know the diesels but I dont know much about the F150's with a 4.6 v8.
the 4.6 is a good motor, I personally think that since the 4.6 came out in '97 it has been a better motor overall than the 5.4. A friend of mine had one with 180,000 on it and it still ran pretty good when he traded it. Do you plan on towing a trailer full of quads or just one in the box? The 4.6 won't have the towing power of the 5.4, but it will still do pretty good.
Isn't the concept of engines the same (pretty much) across the board? I mean, take care of them, maintain them and they usually last a very long time.
However, it is a high mileage vehicle. 91000 in three years. It was a rental vehicle. I'd say go with your gut.... and then take it to a reputable mechanic to look it over.
Suggested retail for it is $14k and change 2007 Ford F150 Regular Cab - Suggested Retail Value - Kelley Blue Book
just remember it's a fleet vehicle. even though it may be properly maintained by the company the people who drive those things rag them like crazy. think of the last vehicle you rented and imagine that happening for 91000 miles....just make sure you get a real good price and check it over VERY carefully.
This one was the regional managers truck. Usually they get rid of the trucks at around 30 to 40 thousand miles. This one had 91000 in three years.
I took it to ford and they looked it over. The rotors were warped and the dealer said they will fix it.
They put new tires on it also at no cost to me.
The only thing the dealer said they saw bad was there was mud baked on the catylic converter. Other than that the truck looked great and was clean on the interior.
They also put a light in the valve cover to see if it was clean inside and they said it looked really clean inside the top of the motor.
I just hope the miles are not too many for the truck. The dealer said the 4.6 was a very reliable motor.
Id say its a really good deal man.... but i agree with the rental thought. Most people i know dont treat a rental like there personal car. they just rap on it. But use your own judgement
The 4.6 is probably the most durable engine you can get. The Lincoln Towncar uses the 4.6 and many of them go 400,000-500,000 miles as limos before they are sold. My cousin uses a F-150 for his company vehicle and the last one had 213,000 when he got a new one and it still used no oil and he changed the oil only every 10,000 miles. (60,000+ per year). His current one is still new to him (2008) with 125,000 troublefree miles.
Well I bought it today. Its a great truck. A little bumpy ride but I think it was designed that way to carry heavy loads.
I have one question though. It idles a little rough. It runs great but sitting, it idles a little rough. Any suggestions on what I can do to fix that?
That's what mine does, I've gotten use to it though. I think the dealership can update the PCM but I'm not sure on that. You also can just shift into neutral when at a light and it will idle a little smoother.
May just need a simply tune-up and replace some plugs other things like that it does have 91k on it so you might just have to do some extra care for it here in the first month to get things running smoother. Did they give you any information on the maintenance history? Might be good to have the tranny flushed too since you mentioned towing a trailer. Just a thought I am not a mechanic.

It had a tranny flush from what the dealer said. It never towed anything though. I had to pay to have a hitch added.
How much is it to change the plugs? Got any idea on what I can do at home before I have to take it to get the plugs done?
It gets great mileage and runs great.....just idles a little rough.
Well a few things you can try at home first are cleaning out the fuel system some with those fuel additives like STP or Gumout. These worked great on my 96 Jeep that I had before my truck. Get that cleaned out some and that should help with the idling a little bit.
Are you having the rough idling while running the AC only or any time the truck idling no matter what else is running or not? Could be the battery is have some issues too and maybe you are drawing more power when stopped.
On my Jeep when I had this kind of problem I replaced the distributor cap, wires, and plugs and also ran some fuel cleaning stuff through and that helped a ton. I also had the radiator flushed which I was surprised helped as much as it did. I started doing these things when it hit about 100k and ran it for another 77k before selling it.
