ok im thinking of a rebuild for my lil b2 but but i want to know what you guys think first. the compresion was 130-138 on the 5th stroke. oil pressure is at 35 psi at 2000 rpm but it has a knocking to it. it knocks all the time. sounds like valve noise though. i gues what i need to know is with the compresion oil pressure and the 18 inches in mercury vacume (fluctuates do to bad comp and the ignition missing) should i do a head job on her and go ahead with my plans to carb her out or wait till i can stuff a 302 in. if i wait for the v8 id like to put a 351 in with a auto. but id more than likly loose my 4X4. what are your alls opinions on this? the only other guy i can get any advise builds race cars and says on the 5th strok i should have 280 psi. this is a truck engine not a race engine so i came here
Okay, you're getting a pinging noise in your engine all the time, right? My 86 did that all the time, especially at startup and on quick acceleration..eg. hills. I was on this website one day, and read a solution to this problem, and it has worked wonders! My oil light was always coming on, then going off. I asked for some help. It's a very cheap and easy fix. Go out and buy a motorcraft oil filter and install it when you do an oil change. It lets more oil through and completely takes care of the "pinging" altogether. Good luck!
Core charge for a 302 is $300.
Autozone
$1100 for a 302
$1400 for a 177
Right now, a good running BII is worth about $1500. If you spend that much on a rebuilt it is kind of like good money after bad because you can never get your money out of it.
The only difference is two years from now, the money spent on a 302 will hold its value. A 302/c4 BII will always be worth $1000 more than a normal one, no matter the year or mileage. imo
I put more than 14 grand in my B2 and still feeding it more George Washington coupons every chance I get. It's worth every penny I have put in it!!!
If you can't run with BIG DOGS stay on the porch!!!
Stuff a V8 in it, it's easy and can be done in a weekend plus you can dust all the ricers.
If you already have a running engine/trans combo add another $1500+- for conversion parts and misc. stuff you didn't expect. The only parts I really needed were the motor mounts,$119,(could've made myself but didn't), radiator, $350, and a new bellhousing $160, to mate the C5 to the small block V8. The 302/5.0 with a C4/AOD would probably be the easiest to swap but due to size of the AOD you will need to modify the floor pan with a Big Hammer.
These are the pics of the parts I used.
These are 4X4 mounts,4X2 similar.
If you have AC and want to keep it the box will need to be modified for valve cover clearance.
Not actual bellhousing to a C4/5.
